Cheney State Park is a great place to go for a walk. You can find lots of pretty shells along the lake. Lots of wild life, the lake is beautiful. They keep the park clean and in good shape. It's a great place to camp, fish, and just picnic . Love it. Yo Yo.

Confusing. Unlit signage. If you arrive at night, you're screwed. Not a person around at 7PM on a Sat. Night.

A large park suitable for walking, hanging out or camping. Seems like there are at least 500 tent sites in various portions.of the park. The park was not busy on a weekday mid-afternoon in November. A few decent hikes and walks, a wonderful boardwalk on a marsh on the west shore, a walk along the water on the east shore, a great place to birdwatch.

Even while the lake is low, this is a great place to meet new friends, learn to sail, or camp and spend time camping with family.

Camped here! Very nice and clean campsite close to the water. With Electric and Water. Had a great view of the lake. I gave it a 4 because there were no pads poured. So you were just parking on the ground so not totally leveled. Nice place and I would stay here again! I believe it was just $13 for the night!

The Smarsh campground is pleasant enough with nice trees and a place to pitch a tent, but the fact that the restrooms were locked before 7 pm when I was hoping to take a shower really spoiled my experience. The confusing instructions on how to make payment was no joy either.

Pros: Nicely designed flat camping sites under mature trees offers shade. It was quiet ( actually fairly deserted). If on a road trip, this is a decent overnight stay. L Cons: Payment Instructions at entry and at kiosk were confusing! After site selection and payment we noticed the camp host “accepted payment”. Showers/Bathroom: the shower building was LOCKED at 7:15pm!!!! Definitely not expected in a hot July where sunset is still after 8:30pm. No hours of operation posted as notice on building or anywhere. This was not appreciated. We went to inquire at camp host… but a notice indicated “office hours” ended at 4:00pm!! “Vault Toilet” is actually a flush toilet LOL - it was unlocked at 7:30pm.

We rented 2 campsites together and they kept giving one of them away to other people. The camp cabin people that watch over us said it was a mistake and being a holiday trying to get anyone to answer the phone was impossible. When I finally did reach the office they said that it was ours and there was nothing they could do about them putting others on it because we should have called sooner. So we paid for July 2nd through the 8th and left on the night of the 6th and didn't get to use the campsite one time even though we paid the $10 a night for it. So beware because someone is double dipping on the payments. Better make sure you get to your site as soon as possible or you might pay for it and not get to use it. The lady on the phone for Cheney lake was kinda of rude and just put me off immediately. Nothing I can do. Yes there is. Refund my money for a site that kept getting rented to others when I already paid for it.

Apparently, don't stay over the 4th of July. Tons of people on the beach near the campground. The beach was trashed. Garbage everywhere. People shooting off fireworks (which were supposed to be prohibited) late into the night. A dirty diaper and hot Cheetos in the showers. Bathrooms without toilet paper and appear to hardly be cleaned. Doesn't seem like the people who run the park care. Never saw the campground hosts during all of this fiasco. Wouldn't come here again.I hope not all Kansas parks are like this. It's hard coming from well maintained and frequently checked Minnesota state parks to this. Just disgusting.

For Kansas, it is a great state park. For the state parks I have been to it's a decent state park! The boat dock by the Marina is nice and easy to access. The bathrooms well ladies sorry they are gross. The campgrounds here are nice and plentiful but still spacious. Overall not a bad park.

Visited this park for the first time and rented a cabin which I soon regretted. The cabin felt filthy; nothing was deep cleaned nor had it been dusted in what seemed to be years. The bed was by far the most uncomfortable bed I had slept on to date. The price you pay for these rentals you would hope to see them properly cleaned and inviting. I would not recommend the cabins. The park itself was ok, nothing exceptional. There was too much trash on the shores of the water, you would think it would be kept up more often.Staff was pleasant.
