My wife is a Colby native, and we visit her family there pretty often. Before La Loteria opened, there was no place for us to go out to eat where we genuinely enjoyed the food. Everything else in Colby is a chain or heavy classic American food (or Americanized Chinese or TexMex) ... there just wasn't a lot of personality on the culinary scene. Then, Irving and Nancy came to town and opened La Loteria. At first glance, it appeared to be a market. When we went in to check it out, we discovered that it is, in fact, a market/restaurant. And -- shockingly -- they offer made-to-order tortas (sandwiches), burritos, quesadillas, and tacos. Not knowing quite what to expect, my wife and I ordered tortas and were *immediately* transformed to flavor heaven. La Loteria has developed a torta that combines the best of several regions of Mexico. It features fluffy, buttered bread with your meat of choice inside, white cheese, lettuce, and avocado (the perfect touch!). I love the beef fajita torta, but you can't go wrong with any of the meats, really. Be sure you ask for the green and red salsas to slather onto the sandwich as you eat! After trying the La Loteria torta, I make it a point to try tortas when I find myself at Mexican restaurants near my house. I've never eaten a torta like the one at La Loteria, despite living in an urban area (Boulder). It's truly one of a kind. Now that La Loteria has been around for a hot minute, it's an open secret that their food is delicious. They've expanded their menu to include menudo (tripe soup) on the weekends, which I love because I grew up eating a version of it during my childhood in Peru. My young nieces and nephew love the chicken tacos, and my in-laws really enjoy the tortas and the burritos. If you're coming in from out of town, it's nice to know what to expect. When you first walk in, you'll see the market part of the store. Keep walking past the market, then veer to the left. Follow the booths to the end of the store, where you'll see someone standing near the grill, ready to ladle you some steaming menudo or make a fresh torta for you. (Don't worry if you don't know what to order; there's a huge menu above the service window.)I highly, highly recommend driving the extra couple of miles to eat here over any place near the interstate. I feel qualified to say that because my wife and I love to eat and have traveled extensively for food. We've eaten at the #1 restaurant in the world (Central in Lima), partaken in delicious pastries in Paris, and we love going to get Ethiopian food in Denver (Eatopia is where it's at!). Irving and Nancy's place -- and their tortas in particular -- rank among the best things we love to eat. This isn't your average TexMex; it's creative, flavorful Mexican food that isn't drenched in yellow cheese. It's awesome.Furthermore, make it a point to chat with Irving and Nancy, and you'll discover that they're two of the nicest people you'll ever meet. I love that when we go to Colby, I get to eat delicious food, and I'm supporting their family every time that I do it. Truly a win-win. I consider myself lucky that they won't be opening a place in Boulder ... I don't think my waistline could handle it.TL;DR: Don't hesitate. Go here, and strongly consider getting a torta because they are transcendental.(PS - I should add that La Loteria isn't a great spot for vegans. But for us omnivores, it's incredible.)
