You don't know what you don't know.... But if you aren't even willing to look it up when you're unsure of the right answer then that starts down the road of negligence.
My husband who usually does his own taxes and is self employed went here because we had a few trickier things to sort out this year.
The meeting took two hours, much of that time he had to correct Fatima, who was unwilling to stop and look things up if she was unsure of the answer, she would have cost us literally thousands in capital gains tax we did not actually have to pay if my husband hadn't already researched it a bit first before going and was able to redirect her. At the end of the session he was still not sure some parts of the forms had been filled in right.
My husband is a really nice kind guy, he came home so stressed and anxious it took all evening to wind him down.
They did not disclose the cost up front and then asked for $875!!!! If my husband had had any idea they would charge this much he would never have stepped in the door.
Thankfully he had accidentally left his wallet at home so that gave him the breathing space from the pressure to pay. They reduced their price to $675 but we looked up their website and there is money back guarantee if you aren't satisfied. We went back to collect the paperwork. There was a lot of guilt tripping to put pressure on to pay. We said we want to take the deal that we get to walk away and do the taxes ourselves and they told us we should pay a $50 consultation fee.
We told them they should see this as an opportunity to learn and grow and we would to and left. There was no shouting or angriness but we really had to hold our ground, which I think would be hard for some people
This type of thing is really hard for us too, we don't like conflict and like to be generous. If you go to people as experts you want to feel like you can trust them.

My tax professional was efficient in filling out the basics like W-2 forms, however the staff seemed poorly informed of EV tax credits. I asked my tax professional about any credits I could claim for installing a home EV charger, and despite asking a manager to verify, she told me there were none. A cursory Google search allowed me to find a credit I qualified for, which she assisted me in filling out. This did not fill me with confidence that H&R Block was doing their best to maximize my tax return. The staff also had trouble answering my questions related to non-charger EV credits.I opted for a 1-on-1 appointment to fill out my taxes this year because of the complexities around EV credits. However, I don't feel like I got any additional value compared to filing my taxes online, and it was certainly not paying about 4x as much.
