December 2025 by Over It
I come to this location a lot, looking at the other reviews yes sometimes it can be a little difficult to find help but this is VERY rare in my experience. The store is always very busy so this is understandable.
Everyone is super helpful, from floor staff helping me find a dupe for a product that didn’t work for me or to find a lip color I’m interested in but having trouble describing… Store associates have frequently turned me on to a new/new to me brand that turned into some of my favorites. Special shout out to the manager who dug up some testers that weren’t on display so I could smell some lip glosses, this helped prevent a future return. This was the female manager, the male manager is very nice too and helped with a return. I also tend to get the same cashier, wish I could remember her name (or any of these folks names), but for the managers, she’s the one with long brown hair who always wears a skirt, she’s a joy to check out with and super helpful!
My last visit they didn’t have what I was looking for but two employees helped me and looked in the back for me. I only asked because their website said it was in stock. I’m guessing people stole them or they haven’t had time to do inventory, which is totally understandable during the holidays. When I saw the empty display, I was a bit miffed that I braved the mall on December 22nd, but by the time I left, they were so nice I wasn’t even mad that I braved the mall only to leave empty handed.

Stopped by Ulta with some friends tonight. Not a bad experience, but just disappointed how they treat their employees. During the time spent inside the store, I noticed a total of 5 employees. One of the five walked into the back room to not be seen again, another was actually helping a customer out, while the third was texting away on her phone in the back of the store, another was walking around randomly literally staring at the ceiling, and all this while they had ONE singular employee at the register. Once the sweet girl at the counter finished checking me out, I proceeded to walk to the back of the store where I saw the one employee texting on her phone. I unfortunately had to interrupt her texting session to tell her that the ONE employee needs help at the register. To which instead of turning her phone off and making her way to help, she proceeds to tell another employee through her headset to go help at the register and proceeds to go back to texting. I have literally never been so dumbfounded in my life before. I truly was shocked. Time was not the issue here, but rather the fact anyone who checked out at the register or who was in line, felt for this poor girl. It is literally less than a week before christmas and they think it’s okay to have ONE girl handling all that stress. I hope the employee texting was not a manager. Like I genuinely questioned the IQ levels of the employees walking out of that store.

I recommend not going to this location. I came in for an exchange, originally I was told I could do an exchange for my online order without paying the difference of the original price. I came in and they returned the original order but charged me full price for the product I wanted to exchange. Then upon talking to supervisor was told i wouldn’t get that price adjustment because the sale was over. Upon talking to customer service they told me what the store did was incorrect.

The stylist was very sweet and did a nice job on my hair, though it took a bit longer than expected. I was especially excited to get my makeup done since it’s only the second time I’ve had it professionally done in my life. Unfortunately, the makeup was disappointing. I don’t think the stylist had much experience with more mature skin. While she tried her best, the look lacked contouring and depth, and my smoky eye wasn’t what I envisioned and the lashes didn’t blend at all.
What really upset me is that by the time I got in my car, the makeup had already creased, settled and highlighted every fine line and wrinkle and it melted off in uneven patches before I even arrived at my event. I ended up panicking and blotting most of it off in the restroom with paper towels. It was frustrating and embarrassing. Not worth the money I spent.
The stylist tried her best, but the makeup didn’t hold up or flatter me. For special events, I’ll stick to a professional salon and doing my own lashes and makeup…

So I get the younger crowd (iykyk) are starting to wear makeup and whatnot, and that using testers has become a (pun intended) testy subject, but PLEASE stop staring people down when they're using them. I'm a 26 year old woman and felt like I was being baby-sat/eyed down by employees just because I was swatching the new k-beauty products. Being a retail worker myself I know that loss prevention is extremely important for metrics, but you can't just treat every customer as if they're a convicted criminal. :/ Cashiers are usually awesome though, it's really just the floor staff near the salon areas that act this way. It makes the atmosphere so uncomfortable.

I frequent this Ulta because it is the closest one to where I live. I will say that this location is wonderful if you know exactly what you're looking for. If you need help from an employee to find your shade or ask a question, I would say to skip this location and go to another location or Sephora instead.

Typically, when I go to Ulta St. Matthews, I just get what I need, and I'm out in a couple of minutes. However, the past three times, Ulta employees have widely shrunk my opinion of this store. While the store is typically stocked and well-maintained, the customer service and general kindness of the employees are less than desired.
Firstly, I was visiting with another individual. I'm aware of the mall policy that people under 18 must be accompanied by an adult Friday through Sundays. We were visiting on neither of those days. We were approached by a team member and reminded of the mall policy that was not in effect at the time. We were never told directly to leave, but we felt extremely unwelcome after that interaction and decided to leave. We were not being loud or disruptive to the store environment, and I had a handful of products I was going to purchase. I felt scared to go to Ulta for several months after this.
Secondly, I was visiting to buy a product that said was in stock at this location. I came in looking for it, I looked everywhere and I could not find it. I went to a team member asking for help, and she was standoffish and rude to me when I asked for help. She kept offering different products that weren't similar to the one I asked for and acted as if it was a chore to help me. I brought up the fact it said it was in stock, assuming she would offer to go check in the back for me, and she never offered or asked. I asked if she would be able to check in the back, and she refused. I left feeling mistreated and unhappy with the service I had been given.
Lastly, I visited yesterday interested in buying a new NYX product that had just been released. We looked everywhere for it and couldn't find it, even though it was listed as in stock. There were zero employees on the floor, and we had to go to the register for help. Two out of three of the workers at the front were on their phones and not paying attention to customers. After a minute, one of the employees who was on her phone offered to help. She very quickly looked for the product I had requested and commented about how it was just out on display, and she didn't know where it went. At this point, I thought she would've gone and checked with another employee or went into the back to check for it because we had confirmation that it was available at this location. Instead, she walked off and got on her phone again. I left and was able to find the product at a different store. This experience really put the nail in the coffin for me and this Ulta.
The Ulta in St. Matthews 6 has consistently failed to meet expectations, and I would recommend Ulta in the Paddock shops. It is the best Ulta I have visited, and they genuinely care about their job there.

Walked in for a pickup order but I was early and hadn’t received the email letting me know my order was ready yet, so I was happy to do some browsing. Was not greeted by a single person. Walked down at least three aisles where employees were present and stocking items, and was never asked if I needed assistance, my presence was never acknowledged. I’m pretty sure one of the things “secret shoppers” look for at Ulta is if they are greeted within the first few minutes of entering the store…Walked to the aisle where the product I ordered was, and saw there were two left. Wasn’t really worried about it, since the store was pretty empty, went ahead and picked out another item and went to checkout. While checking out I get an email notifying me the item I ordered was no longer in stock. Weird because I literally just saw TWO of said product right in its designated space. Alerted the cashier and she asked the young lady whom was suppose to be doing the online orders about the item and she stated “Yes we’re out of that item.” I then responded “There are two back there…” to which she responded there were none when she looked (I was literally looking at it not even a minute ago). So I walk back there and there and behold the TWO remained in their designated space. I grabbed one and went back to the front to check out. Was it that big of a deal? Not for me bc I was already in the store browsing, but how hard is it as an employee to simply walk in the aisle where the item is located and retrieve it for a paying customer? Also, no apologies. A simple “sorry about that ma’am” would’ve sufficed, but they just carried on with their “busy” morning (I was likely one of three customers in the whole store). And this is why online shopping is becoming more favorable. Customer service and curtesy is at an all time decline.

It's a pretty nice store, it's just the employees are not professional and always spoiled looking brats, prices are high in this store, hard to get waited on in the salon department, just needs better employees !

Staff were friendly and helpful. what is unhelpful is that they don't accept HSA cards in store, only online, but my HSA card can only be used in person. Not only did this hold up the line for others it also wasted my time. It would have been great to know in advance that HSA eligible items are an online exclusive

Between being followed around and stared down as if I'm a convicted criminal, employees whose level of knowledge makes it seem like they just started yesterday, many testers being out of stock, and the poor lighting that makes it really hard to tell what's actually going to look good on you in real life, I think I'll just order from Amazon next time. I get that shoplifting is a major problem for these retailers, but it's a real turnoff to be watched like a hawk. I wasn't even carrying a purse!
