Shelby County Cooperative Extension Service is a valuable resource that all residents should be aware of. The departments within the organization are;4-H Youth DevelopmentFamily & Consumer SciencesNutrition Education ProgramAgriculture & Natural ResourcesCounty Agriculture Investment ProgramHorticultureCommunity Development It is sponsored by the University of Kentucky, College of Agriculture, Food and Environment. The motto of the agency is "We're Here To Help You".When we first moved to Kentucky we became familiar with one aspect of the service they provide. We were able to take soil samples from three areas of our farm and have them analyzed for what amendments the soil needed depending on desired plants to be grown. At the time this service was free but I don't know if that is still the case. The second way we became familiar with the organization was through the 4-H program and clubs that they sponsored. Our son and daughter were immediately welcomed into the rabbit club and learned valuable information on care of their pets, and how to show their rabbits. Several years later our daughter joined the dog club with our golden retriever. The monthly meetings were creative and fun. Our dog was too immature to make the grade at that time for becoming a visiting pal at nursing homes but that was ok. Through the high school years our daughter participated in a variety of arts & crafts and annual entries into the County Fair and State Fair.As I get closer to retirement I have been following activities that I may become active in. Our local newspaper advertises programs such as the Master Gardener class, Homemaker Clubs, cooking activities, sewing projects/gatherings and more. The physical location of this agency is easy to get to and has a large parking lot. I look forward to having the time to become involved in this aspect of my community.2023/ #16

The extension office is a great resource in our community, providing opportunities for local youth to get involved and explore the world around them.
