For many years, I trusted Darwin. We all make mistakes, and that was a big one. In my experience, he is an incompetent mechanic and performs consistently sloppy work. That shouldn't surprise anybody, as I never saw a shred of evidence that he had any formal training as a mechanic, or, for that matter, ever read a repair manual in its entirety. Time and time again, I had to take my car back to him to fix his screw-ups. As for diagnostics, you'd be better off consulting Zoltar. Or, more practically, the Dry Ridge AutoZone store: they will not only run an accurate check-engine process (at no cost), but give you a printout as well. Then there is what I call the "Darwin Tax": he routinely destroyed perfectly good parts during dis-assembly. I had to pay for the replacements. Darwin is the reason you want to get your old parts back, even if they are (supposedly) defective. Examples: - Replace timing belt on 97 Toyota Camry. Immediate 20% power loss. Belt was off a tooth. Darwin said car wouldn't run if that was the case. I had to practically pull his teeth to get him to fix it. As expected, he screwed up. - Coolant leak. Darwin said radiator and replaced it. Leaking continues. Turns out to be the bypass hose, which I replaced myself. In addition, he destroyed the radiator temperature sensor in the replacement process, and I had to pay him for a new one. - Ignition problem. Darwin starts running "compression test" (seriously). Says compression gauge is "fluctuating". Well, that's what they do! I told him to replace the appropriate ignition coil. Problem solved, but not as a result of his "diagnostic expertise". To this day, car has plenty of power: compression loss is not a problem, and never was. - I buy a car from him - his personal car (yes, facepalm) - a 2003 Toyota Camry. Found loose spark plugs, 100% clogged PCV valve, air filter box not screwed shut, wrong spark plugs, wrong battery (see photo). Car was using oil at an alarming rate (a quart every 600-700 miles). He claimed it was "weeping" out the drain plug...without any evidence of such a leak. He put 9,000 miles on the car and never noticed? Ridiculous. After fixing the various problems myself, it is now a decent vehicle. Find a real mechanic. There are a few of them closer to Dry Ridge. And, above all, do not even consider buying a used car from this man.
