Closed and is now Belli. Not the same. Apparently new owners can't manage their time and prioritize take out over sit in customers. Don't recommend.

Hi, the cat that y'all take care of, really neads some help. It is thin, and covered in scabs.

It's with great sadness I just read the new owner has closed this place. I appreciate us being saved from "deplorable kitchen conditions" but, and I know this is taboo to say out loud, who among us has not enjoyed comforting food and environment at a slight expense to food safety? Most of us probably eat at fast food places, corner stores, gas stations, and our friends' kitchens... I never thought that they were being ultra clean in that kitchen but I didn't mind because I felt as if a friend were cooking something just for me. If this place closes forever I'm going to miss a favorite source of craft beer, lovely neighbors, delicious hashbrowns, and sitting with a lovely stinky cat on my lap in the sun.

This was my go to place while being in college at LSU. Every time I was with anyone who said they were hungry, this is where we would go. The place is super local and there is daily characters that reoccur and fill the place with life. The staff are memorable, helpful, and make some of the best food for lunch. Getting to sit back and enjoy a chicken flamingo and a drink while watching people go by and the local cat come beg is wonderful vibes. Also try the flamingo fries, they are worth it!

The cutest place - very unique! Delicious homemade muffins, cookies, pastries, & desserts. You could spend so much time just looking at all of the unique things in this store!

I've eaten here a few times but never did a review, at least not one I remember . This is a fairly nice neighborhood eatery right off of the downtown area of Baton Rouge. On this particular visit I ordered the chicken sandwich which came with a side of honey mustard. oOverall this was a pretty decent chicken sandwich. My only complaint in that the chicken was a little dry. You definitely need to add the mayonnaise or honey mustard on it. I can't complain about the price I think it was $6.99. The service was okay at best. You would think that it would be better since this is a neighborhood type place.

A gem that is a must visit. In an area I have never been too. The area is so quaint and houses and tree lined streets make you feel like you have done gone back in time. Restaurant grocery just confirms you been warped! Good food adds too!!!!

Capitol Grocery is a Baton Rouge tradition! The National Register of Historic Places plaque indicates its been there since 1914. It's open again in its latest incarnation, and it remains an important part of life for not only Spanish Town, but for the Downtown community. As the name would suggest, Capitol Grocery is a neighborhood grocery store. One can go there to buy the grocery and convenience items that one might need. It's a great place to grab a beverage or snack while walking in Spanish Town. There's seating inside where one can enjoy climate controlled conditions. However, I almost always prefer sitting at the tables out front. These are shaded by trees, and allow one to experience Spanish Town first hand. The neighborhood cat might come by to visit with you, and the sound of birdsong is quite relaxing. If you are looking to eat something substantial, their menu offers a lot of good choices. These include some vegetarian options that look tasty. There is a weekday lunch special that is a good choice for a great plate lunch. Then there is the sandwich and burger menu. This has everything from BLTs to Po-Boys. My current favorite is the Chicken, Mushroom, and Swiss Po-Boy, but I'm still checking to see what other sandwiches offer. One can add a bag of chips and a drink to make your sandwich order a combo for a very reasonable price. I haven't yet tried the breakfast menu, but it looks intriguing.People in Downtown or visiting Baton Rouge should make a point of going by Capitol grocery. It's location near the State Capitol makes it an excellent place to take a break when visiting this magnificent monument. State Employees in the local Capitol Park know about the excellent lunch options at Capitol Grocery. If you are visiting Baton Rouge and staying or passing through the Downtown area, come and enjoy one of our most local and historic places. It's a living landmark, that is a part of the daily routine of local residents as well as an eclectic mix of other visitors. It's a relaxing and memorable place to visit!

WALK OFF HOME RUN TO WIN THE WORLD SERIES!Real people, real food, real life. Laid back Baton Rouge style. While traveling last month on business, I stopped in here every day to pick up lunch for myself and some co-workers. While it happens to be a grocery store, the place serves a mean lunch (and breakfast). Personally, I can attest to the Chicken Bacon Guacamole and Flamingo Chicken Cheesesteak Po Boys and the grilled chicken Caesar salad. However, the place does burgers, other Po Boys, and even a daily lunch special which you can find on their IG at @capitolgrocerybr.The charm of the place resides in the people who frequent it. Locals are here every day from the neighborhood and beyond. Whether outside at the patio seating on beautiful spring days or inside at a table taking a break from the home telework office, the people are what make this place special (say hey to Lanny from the Advocate for me, if you see him in there). The two ladies who run the place, Katie and Annie, also help define the joint. They're both down home, salt-of-the-earth ladies who would feed you or give you the shirt off of their backs if you needed it. Aldin, who also works here, is a nice guy as well, and you might run into him there occasionally.I highly recommend this place for more than food, but a boost in your daily self care. Enjoy!

If you are reading this- is because you already love this place - or you are on the fence...If the latter- read about why we love it!1. LOCAL!2. Spanish Town3. Awesome People and4. Great food!Spanishtown is a world unto itself. It is blessedly walking distance- so today there is breakfast!I got the chicken biscuit and asked for honey and hot sauce (don't judge me)... Here is what makes this place awesome- the sweet lady at counter gave me two different sauces (Frank's red hot and the cayenne sauce used in house). I love that!I love it because it was so thoughtful and the best reason to eat local. Biscuit was fresh, warm, soft and buttery with out being soaked. I believe in this place. If you are lucky enough to have it in your orbit- you should too.

This place is awesome! Got collard greens and jambalaya which was delicious. Staff was really friendly and easy to talk to. Good music was playing on the speakers and the whole place had a very mellow relaxed vibe. 10/10 will eat again

Great burgers to eat here and a good selection of beer to bring home.
