Save Your Money – Go to TJ Maxx Instead!
I really wanted to like Once Upon a Child, but every visit has been disappointing. The prices here are honestly ridiculous for a resale shop. I’ve seen a simple pair of newborn Carter’s shorts priced at $8, when you can go to TJ Maxx and get a brand-new Nike 3-piece set for $8.99. The value just isn’t there at all.
And when it comes to selling your items, be prepared for extremely low offers. You can bring in brand-new, unopened items worth $40–$50, and they’ll try to give you $2 for them. It feels like a total scam.
On top of that, the owner is very unfriendly. The attitude, tone, and overall vibe are snarky and unwelcoming every time I’ve been in. It makes the whole experience even worse.
If you’re looking to save money or get fair offers for your items, you’re honestly better off going to TJ Maxx or selling your things elsewhere. This place is not worth the time or the frustration.

Way overpriced for used clothes, I mean why is a newborn baby outfit $10 it wasn’t a special brand carters? I can find that price new. Used toys over priced one action figure doll was $8. I saw a pair of very used very worn stride rite shoes for $15. I would find a different one that knows how to price well. The one I go to back home it’s rare to see anything priced at $10. The boutique clothing will be that.

Once Upon a Child in downtown Mandeville (off Hwy 22 in the Azalea Shopping Center) is a hidden gem for parents. It’s a quaint, moderately sized store packed with all kinds of options for kids—clothing, shoes, toys, books, swimwear, and even a few video selections. They mainly carry sizes for infants through age 12, with the occasional piece in the 14–16 range, though those go fast!
What really makes this location stand out is the quality. It’s in one of the more upscale areas of Mandeville, so you’ll often find lots of name-brand items and very few off-brand pieces. Everything tends to be in great condition, and the store keeps up with the seasons and current styles.
One of the best parts? You can bring in your gently used, clean children’s items and sell them. They’ll offer you a garage-sale-style price, and you can choose to get cash or store credit to shop in return. Just a heads-up: if you go over a certain cash payout amount, you will get a tax form, therefore if selling, come prepared with your drivers licensure when you check your items in at the buy counter.
The buyback process is easy, but not super fast. If you drop your items off by 10 AM, you’ll usually hear back by around 3:30 PM. You can stay and wait in the store, but it’s more practical to explore the area and come back later—maybe grab lunch or shop around Mandeville for the afternoon.
Parking depends on the time of day. Weekdays are smooth, but weekends or school holidays can make it trickier to find a spot, especially if you’re hauling in items to sell. There’s parking available—it just might not be right up front.
Staff are always friendly and helpful, and the store is well-organized and clean. Getting in and out of the shopping center from Highway 22 can be a bit of a challenge depending on traffic, which is almost always a factor in that area.
Overall, it’s a great place to save on kids’ essentials while also recycling your own. Worth the visit if you’re in the area—and worth the drive if you’re not!

The workers are not friendly the rules are crappy,an they make you feel awful that your reselling merchandise! I called ahead of coming to find out just how thgs work, she did not tell me anythg of a certain container an all the B.S that was said once I arrived. They only want 18gallon Tupperwares or smaller an no trash bags! An 1 per customer I mean maybe just me but I don't buy containers an look for a gallon size.lol..IDK this time going was just a bad experience for me.I wouldn't recommend this location to anyone I'd say find another spot! I had an entire container of new shoes in boxes so that took 1 bin an my other container was clothes all washed an neatly folded that they would not look at because I had 1 container already! So I drove 2hours for 1 container..Really bad customer service told me to return another day for other container! Lol..I thk Baton Rouge store was much better! They didn't give a limit on merchandise!

While my first experience was great, I can’t say the same for my second experience. I came in with some clothes my daughter never wore and upon entering no one greeted me or smiled / made eye contact. I felt super uncomfortable immediately. I was not helped with the check in process either. When going to the counter to see what I would be given for the clothes, I felt like a group of the staff were talking about me due to the whispers and eye contact I received. Can’t say for sure but that is what I observed. All in all the service was not the most welcoming. This has nothing to do with the store itself.

It was an efficient way to make a couple bucks to go towards buying my kiddo some new clothes. For me though, it isn’t quite how i expected it to be, more goodwill like, & in my opinion isn’t worth making the drive for me, since my son is still a baby. However, if you are local in Mandeville, i’d say it’s moreso worth it since you could go home and come back more quickly.Only critique I have is that it was a little anxiety inducing for my first time in there, as I felt a little judged for not knowing the process or where to go when my offer was ready, but otherwise i’d say the employees are friendly enough.

Poor service they are quick to send you text messages about 30% off but if you drive a hour away to bring stuff and they tell you they aren't accepting or buying items so you waste gas and money and I was there at 9:40 amThe older lady was COMPLETELY RUDE about it and came off super aggressiveHonestly you have better chance selling your items at the Baton Rouge location or selling on Mercari or PoshmarkThe selection of the clothings is ridiculously hazard I was going to purchase Christmas pajamas and when I unzipped and it was completely dirty with stains they don't inspect the clothesPlease be aware of stores like this. And if you do shop make sure you inspect the clothes

The Owner was patient and over came my frustration when I first entered the store. This store buys and sells baby stuff and believe it or not they took good care of me. I found myself buying stuff while in there store and I will tell you the store is organized and clean. Was really refreshing that the customer service there was more patient then I was. They won over a customer .We get carried away and so caught up in this busy world..but when stores associates and team lead take the time to explain more. It makes sense. They were really sweet and I enjoyed my experience. Thanks everyone.Support local shops.
