I am very pleased with the care provided by Dr. Pesnell and his staff. They were very professional, on time, caring, and effective at taking care of Boudreaux, my mother’s DachsHund. She was unable to use her back legs. Dr. Pesnell diagnosed her problem immediately. She was walking again within 3 days. I could not ask for better or more caring treatment. Thank you so much for taking care of Boudreaux and us.

He is the most caring vet you will ever meet. I’ve been going to him for years and could not imagine going anywhere anywhere else. Doc is straightforward and he pulls no punches.

Dr. Pesnell may be gruff at times but he genuinely cares about people and animals. He once came to the office at midnight to save my dog's life.

I have used Dr. Pesnell since he bought the business from Dr. Wurster. He has taken good care of all our critters. From routine care to surgeries, there have been no problems. He can be blunt, but certainly not unprofessional. There have never been any issues there. I'm not sure what others are complaining about with one star reviews, but I'm sure if they called Dr. Doug, he would be glad to address any issues. Unfortunately, animals die during "routine" surgeries as do humans and it's always difficult to accept. The facility is very old but it is clean. Also, pet care can be expensive. They pay a decent wage for staff and instruments and medications are expensive. Veterinarians obtain a college degree before being accepted to Veterinary school. Then 3-4 more years of Vet school depending on which school they go to. LSU where Dr. Pesnell went is 4 years. That's 8 years of education before they can make a dime. Are they perfect? Of course not. And they don't do miracles. Thanks, Dr. Doug for taking care of my sweet puppers and THE cat.

I had my baby here, Mufasa, for boarding for a few days while I was gone for work and also a neuter. I was informed that he had a heart attack while under anesthesia. The doctor told me that he was most likely stressed and home sick but if he say that he’s feeling that way while still go through with the surgery. I’m extremely upset because this could have been avoided

Most heartless place I've been they watched my dog die in my arms and charged my 80 dollars for nothing but if I had 500 dollars they would save him since I didn't have the money I asked how much to put him out of his misery and it was 50 dollars so I told them I would take him home and do it myself he died in my arms before we left the parking lot so I ask why is everything about money I'm sorry I would be broke if I was a vet and was asked that question I don't like to see anything suffer

Dr. Doug Pensell is VERY unprofessional & inconsiderate. Caused unnecessary stress on my friend and her pup. Highly recommend sticking to Good Hope. Avoid this place if you want good care for your pet.

If you know me, then you would know I’m not one to talk down on people/businesses, especially a local business. But after my experience with Cane River Veternary Clinic yesterday and today, I would hate anyone else to have such a horrific experience with their animal. I dropped Beau (my dog) off for a basic neutering at Cane River Vet. After the procedure was completed I went to pick him up and was informed Beau had chewed out his sutures causing bleeding and more inflammation. Why did he not have cone on head after procedure to prevent this from happening? After speaking with Pesnell about how the surgery went and if Beau would be okay to come home after chewing the sutures, he assured me Beau would be fine and could come home. After being home for about 30 minutes I noticed blood on his dog bed and immediately called the vet. I was told to bring him back in and they would put a compression pad on him to stop the bleeding. After Pesnell wrapped Beau’s wound, he assured me once again Beau was okay and good to go home. Pesnell failed to let me know how severe the inflammation on Beau’s wound was and that the bleeding would still occur. I have had & seen several dogs that have been neutered and have never see inflammation this severe. And today after speaking with other Vet Clinics, I was informed that this incident does not happen often and there may have been a mistake made during surgery, causing these implications (severe swelling & bleeding). It breaks my heart to see Beau in pain from what was supposed to be a simple procedure. I would hate to see another dog lover go through this. I expect the very best from my Vet, as if he/she were my own doctor. Overall, from the procedure to visiting with Pesnell this was an uncomfortable, costly and poor decision made by me. Always be cautious when choosing a new vet.
