The Bayou Teche Museum serves as a welcoming front door to the rich and diverse Bayou Teche region of South Louisiana. It offers interactive exhibits that highlight the area's unique culture, history, and industries, including sugar cane, salt mining, Cajun traditions, food, and music. Visitors can learn about the history of New Iberia, from its founding to modern times, with well-designed displays and an engaging intro video. One of the highlights is the salt mine, which visitors can explore, and the museum's location in town makes it easy to access other local attractions like Victor's Cafe and the Pie Bar, both recommended for local cuisine and treats. The museum also celebrates notable local figures such as jazz legend Bunk Johnson and artist George Rodrigue, whose studio and last unfinished painting are on display. While tours of the historic home are currently unavailable, visitors can walk around the gardens and view artists painting the scenery during special events like Plein Air Painting Show. The grounds feature informational placards, including stories about past family members and local history, adding depth to the visit. The museum staff, especially the friendly director, enhance the experience with their helpfulness. Overall, the Bayou Teche Museum provides a rewarding glimpse into the culture, history, and art of the Southern Louisiana area, making it a must-visit for those interested in the region’s rich heritage.
I've been a few times over the years. It's a old and very beautiful building filled with lots of history. The ladies who work here are very nice and informative. Im looking forward to seeing the new expanded part of the museum one day.
