I live on a fixed income and find the estimated cost of services applied to my checking account very discouraging when I have an insurance policy-- United Healthcare Dual Complete-- that covers the cost of these services.

If you’re prone to vasovagal syncope or have issues getting your blood taken, be prepared to advocate for yourself. When I walked in & was finally able to talk to a human (you can’t get anyone on the phone, and the check in process is digital), I asked if they had a bed/exam table I could lay down on, and was told they did, but it was “covered in stuff.”
They tried several times to dissuade me from laying down, which made me feel like they weren’t listening to me or taking my health issues seriously (I have a chronic illness that makes my BP & heart rate erratic - I get dizzy and pass out often during blood draws, so I was trying to avoid a difficult situation for me AND the phlebotomist!)
Eventually they agreed to lay me down, but made me lie down on the table while it was still covered in medical equipment! My feet were right next to a centrifuge! This seems pretty unsafe, unprofessional, and unsanitary.
Other than that the draw was great, they were kind to me (once they realized I was not just trying to be difficult and actually had a medical issue, I guess?) and the draw itself was quick and painless. But the attitude about the table when I first walked in, and making me lay on a table covered in stuff rather than clearing it, was really inappropriate.
Patients getting light headed and passing out during blood tests is very common - this is why labs have those tables available! They should not be being used as storage, and staff should be more accommodating and have a better attitude towards patients who need to utilize those facilities. Pictured is the table I laid down on (they were kind enough to remove the metal storage box next to my head once they realized they wouldn’t be able to fit my arm on the table otherwise).
Edit: I called Quest’s main HQ to report this incident and they were kind and helpful. The site supervisor/manager for this location, who was present during the incident, also called me today to discuss my experience. She was quite defensive during this conversation and attempted to blame me for not expressing that i was uncomfortable during the process. She explained that even though they do have a table, that exam room has been “repurposed” as an office, and they don’t usually see patients in there, but were trying to make an exception for me so I didn’t have to go to a different location. While I appreciate the attempt at accommodation, if it’s true that this location does not have a working exam table / room for people who need to lay down, that should have been made clearer, vs my being told that they DO have a table but that it’s “covered in stuff.” I would rather have had all the information up front so I could have booked at a facility that could accommodate my needs in a safe, sanitary, professional way. Quest HQ should consider noting on its website which locations offer this accommodation (tables vs chairs) to avoid this kind of situation in the future.

My phlebotomist was patient, reassuring, thorough and gentle. As a registered nurse i understand getting a lab draw can be stressful to many people. She made it a pleasant experience
