I am thrilled with my new beautiful purse and the entire shopping experience. Laura was an absolute delight to work with, turning the purchase into a memorable experience rather than just picking something off a shelf. I was especially excited to learn about the option for a custom bag and will definitely return for a custom order. Thank you, Laura! ❤️

I have had my Rough and Tumble waxed canvas tote for over six years and it literally is getting better with age. It's the best bag I've ever had and the craftswomanship is incredible. I love everything I have ever purchased from this company. I have purchased toys for my children and jewelry from local jewelers. I have even purchased an antique hand woven wool blanket that I adore. Their aesthetic is on point and I'm a happy customer.

This brand is AMAZING! I went through and read the 1 star reviews because I always like to know the possible negatives of something I am going to purchase/have purchased.Thankfully, I have not experienced these issues with ANY of my bags but with daily use ANYTHING will wear down. I have 10-12 of these purses now and a lot of littles and by regularly switching in/out of them I think it has helped cut down on the wear of the bags. These are ART pieces with true craftsmanship behind them. Not to mention an awesome community of people you can find to connect with on facebook and ask all the questions and salivate over their beautiful custom made handbags!THANK YOU for these bags they're the BEST!

I’m an unhappy Rough & Tumble customer. Tears developed in the lining of my hobo pack less than a year after purchase. R&T charged me $42 to repair it. In doing so, it failed to honor its warranty. Eighteen months later, the entire lining needed to be replaced. There was a large hole in the bottom of the pocket. There was another hole where the cloth was once again tearing away from the leather. The piece was riddled with thin areas and fraying. Cost to replace: $60. That would have been $102 in repairs on a $278 bag that was only two years old.I offered to pay $18, subtracting the cost of the first repair, which I never should have been charged. R&T declined. In fact, I was told I was getting a bargain: “Most bag companies charge upwards of $300 to replace their linings,“ production manager Louise Gartland wrote in an email. “Our $60 charge is a service for our customers only and not anything we make money doing but only to ensure an option for them.”I decided against the repair. I tore out the lining and used the bag for another two years, at which point, the leather seams were pulling apart and I threw the bag away.

These are the most beautiful bags I have ever seen. They are so carefully crafted of the softed, loveliest leather. I was surprised to see the negative reviews here because I have had a great customer service experience and my bags have an extremely durable lining that is easy to clean and really pretty! I love that this is a company where materials are carefully sourced, designs carefully though out, and people paid properly for their hard work. The convertible strap bags are unbelievable-- shoulder, crossbody, & backpack options in one bag!!! There are some helpful youtube videos out there if you really want to see a Rough and Tumble bag handled. Happy bag researching!

I purchased a bag from here a few years ago after spending a few more years looking at it. It was an Etsy shop at the time. Yes the bags are a bit pricey BUT considering it is the same price for a lot of designer bag (expect... this one is custom made and can actually fit a laptop, sweater, books, etc.). I love this bag to bits and never once have I regret purchasing it (like some of those designer bags). It has kept up over the years so well that I sadly don't need a second one (and that is saying a lot given the cold Canadian weather). PLUS - I am a girl that didn't want another laptop bag that looked like it was made for a man (caz you know.. girl too use a computer). If I ever need another laptop bag, this would be my first and only place to look. THANK THANK THANK for making my amazing bag.

I'm an unhappy Rough & Tumble customer. Tears developed in the lining of my Hobo Pack less than a year after purchase. R&T charged me forty-two dollars to repair it. There's another hole where the cloth is once again tearing away from the leather. The piece is riddled with thin areas and fraying. Cost to replace: $60. "Our $60 charge is a service for our customers only and not anything we make any money doing but only to ensure an option for them." I've decided against the repair. When I told Rough & Tumble that it had lost a customer, Gartland offered to take 20 percent off a new bag of my choice. No thanks. My experience tells me it's a bad investment.

I've been purchasing from RT for some time now. I love the quality of the leather they use, the bags they make, down to working with the company on customs. Customs you say?!! Yes!! A purse/bag company that lets you make CUSTOM BAGS!!! It's a blast and I don't know any company out there that makes such nice bags AND gives you the option to customize your bag. Louise is fabulous to work with on brainstorming custom designs. These are not cookie cutter bags. People new to the brand need to know since they are not mass produced, they are hand made one at a time. So a bag "in production" on the website can take a few weeks to be completed and shipped. Bonus: all bags are made in the USA, female owned company.

I have been collecting bags made by Rough and Tumble Designs for two years. The majority of my bags have been custom designed. It is rare to have the opportunity to choose the components of a custom leather bag. I could not be more pleased with the company, their products or their work ethics. The bags are all handmade, one at a time in Maine and provide employment to an area not known for their economic prospects. Rough and Tumble is a small company, run by women whom I admire. Their dedication to the craft of fine leatherwork while striving to maintain a customer focused business must be a challenge, albeit rewarding. If you expect service on par with Amazon, this may not be a perfect fit for you. If you do find you can get past the occasional delayed response to an email or your bag sometimes taking longer than expected (remember it's handmade by people) then you are in for a wonderful treat! I believe this company is worth your time, money and your patience.

Updated to add one more big middle finger from the company. After the first fiasco, I insisted on being refunded. I was told a refund would be issued "right now," and this was a lie. It was not until four days later, and only after me asking repeatedly, that they said they had to mail me a check. Nobody took the initiative to contact me. Even better, I was then told - and confirmed later - that when the bag WAS done, they would contact me to see if I still wanted it. About three weeks later, Louise did email me with a picture of the bag. I didn't see it right away, and when I did two days later, I immediately replied and told her I was interested. It took her 24 hours to get back to me, and I asked one more question about 5 minutes after her email. That evening I decided I would buy it anyway and just sell it to someone else if I changed my mind, because I didn't want someone having my custom bag. I was still waiting for her to answer my question, however. At 1 pm Saturday she emailed me saying "Good news!" (in what universe? Why was it *good* news to me that they had sold it? I hadn't asked her to) that she had sold it to someone else. I can only imagine this was done to be punishment to me for being vocal about the issues I have had. I'm sorry, but lying to customers repeatedly is not behavior I can ever support. They had the chance to at least make this my last purchase but to act like adults and do the right thing. Instead of a business, this has been handled like a second grader on a playground. Oh, and anyone who has customs that are taking longer than you were promised, look into FTC regulations and the hefty fines that come from not updating customers and offering refunds when the merchandise is overdue. Funny that since I replied to Louise that I couldn't understand why in the world they would sell the bag without waiting for me to answer them (and when I was waiting for HER to answer my question), and told her it sure felt like this was being done as a personal thing to spite me, I have had crickets. Hard to say though whether this actually means she was admitting to it, or it's their usual poor communication. I'm sure lots of other people have good experiences. Heck, when you buy 10 bags a month, I'm sure they bend over backwards to help you and not screw up. But this isn't just a mistake; this is a pattern of telling me one thing and doing another, of taking the wrong action at every single step that there was a choice to do the right thing or make it worse. I literally could not have scripted this transaction in a way that was a bigger slap in the face at every turn. Think about whether a business that treats customers that way (customers who have ordered 10 customs, of which 6 have had issues in some way, shape, or form, but has still had enough faith in the company to keep ordering) is a business you want to spend your hard earned money with.

I wish I didn't have to write this review but my messenger bag - which I paid close to $300 - was neither rough nor tumbled. I've long been a fan of this brand - my wife has purchased close to a dozen bags for herself and friends - but when my messenger bag developed a tear (due to nothing I did) I notified the company and got the run-around (it took several e-mails and numerous visits to their Portland shop and even then didn't get any reply) and, in the end, came up empty. I was rather appalled that they didn't stand behind the bag in spite of our being a regular customer; needless to say we're done with Rough & Tumble as the quality of the bag was not up to the price or the name.
