My scallop dish was beyond disappointing. Paying $36.00 for four scallops is beyond belief. There was latterly nothing else of substance on the plate. I'm sorry that what formerly was a wonderful place to have dinner has sunk so low.

We have had mixed experiences at the Whale's Rib tavern, some very good but last night was disappointing. My wife had a cod dish and I had Wagyu steak. The cod was lukewarm and the accompanying potatoes were undercooked. My steak, which I ordered medium, was barely rare. On the plus side the sauces were quite good, and the server quite personable. Perhaps it had something to do with being at the end of the season, but these mistakes are characteristic of a kitchen that does not have its act together. Again, we have had good food in the past at the Inn, but this meal was not up to standards.

A marvelous inn with a great dining room downstairs. The food is elegantly prepared, very delicious and served graciously. We love Whale Rib's Tavern part of (and separate from) the Pilgrim Inn

We visited the Whale Room because we were staying at the Pilgrim's Inn. When we heard that the Whale Room had a Michelin chef, we were delighted. True to form at the Pilgrim's Inn, the dining room was comfortable and filled with ambiance. Our server was very nice. That's the only good thing I can say about the dinner. One dish was a four by four cut of cod drowned in a tasteless sauce. The other dish consisted of four scallops with tiny pieces of apple. No bread accompanied the “meal”. We were so disappointed in the food that we declined dessert.

We dined on a Thursday evening and the food (delicious) and service (friendly and courteous) were wonderful. We had the mussels and fennel/apple salad as starters. My husband had the seafood stew, slightly spicy, which he enjoyed. I had the lobster “pot pie”. Both the maple walnut ice cream sundae with caramelized popcorn and the spiced apple cake with pumpkin walnut ice cream were perfect endings to our great meal! We look forward to returning on our next trip to Deer Isle area and Pilgrim's Inn!

We had a wonderful server who was charming and attentive. The menu is short but every entree looked delicious. My partner and I both had the cod which was outstanding. Salads and desserts were ample and delicious. A lovely atmosphere and charming inn and restaurant. Recommend!

Our first time there this past Saturday night. When my wife walked in the dining room, she said wow!! I guess that says it all. Great rustic ambience, great food, and weight staff. Would definitely go back again if we're ever in the area.

We had an excellent brunch in their cozy restaurant. The inn keeper Lindsay was fantastic.

Warm, inviting hospitality greets you at this charming bed and breakfast. Located in the middle of town but with the feeling of being secluded in a peaceful oasis. There are 3 floors of rooms and a few cottages available, situated on a 2-acre lot along the water. There are plenty of places to unwind and explore on the property, including a bar, beer garden, game room and outside. The restaurant, Whale Rib Tavern, is the surprise gem here. The James Beard nominee chef owned a 2-star Michelin restaurant which was also five-star AAA rated. So be sure to make reservations for dinner. The mattresses could be a little more comfortable, and the coffee could be a bit stronger, but otherwise it’s a magnificent stay!Breakfast is hearty and delicious. Small snacks are available for the taking and house made cookies are put each night with tea. There is a communal refrigerator in one of the lounge rooms.I look forward to returning and would like to bring some art supplies and draw, paint, write and read by the water. Inspiring setting!

Outstanding choice of appetizers/entrees creatively imagined and superbly prepared. Good selection of wines/beers/spirits. Servers pleasant and helpful and attentive. The rustic setting is charming and relaxing. The Whale's Rib is a welcoming place catering to all budgets and tastes.

Celebratory dinner and it was very disappointing. It started out great with a lovely waitress and great service. We ordered the mussels to share and it came with one little piece of toast. The broth was great but not enough bread to soak it up and enjoy it. The Flank Steak was one of most un-appetizing plates I've ever seen - totally charred and not a vegetable to be found. The Cod was good and so was the pasta. The Lobster "pot pie" was $40 and a terrible disappointment. It came cold and I left me still hungry. It had a tiny piece of pastry and a few carrots. The lobster was tender and sweet and there was enough of it but not enough of anything else. The "scoop" of icecream that came with dessert was barely more than a tablespoon. I don't mind paying for a good meal but this was extremely overpriced for the quality.

We were told the chef had 2 Michelin stars, so we had high expectations. My entree and desert were both disappointing. Four very small scallops on a plate were Luke warm and rubbery inside. My dessert was called a blueberry streusel, but was more like a blueberry soup with some crunch on the bottom. Sorry, but I can't recommend this restaurant.

I'm sorry to write this review because I wanted to have a great meal here (had one at Acadia when the chef was there) - but geez: my food was cold. Lukewarm flank steak (what happened to a crisp outside/ medium rare interior)? The twin and puny side of potatoes were wrinkled and cool (sitting around way too long) and the wilted greens were cold and lacked any sparkle or surprise. Just dull cool greens. I rarely send food back but was insulted by this meal. Had a bowl of chowder instead - fabulous! So, step it up or loss that star. They only get in the way of true creativity, anyway! Sorry Whale Rib but when I ask your staff what maitake (sp?) is I would rather hear it's a mushroom than a spice. Get smart. Dig in to your talent and curiosity. Love good food. You did once. Diane

We had yet another fantastic meal with friends. The wait staff is wonderful, food fantastic and ambiance lovely. Flank steak was yummy and my favorite the cucumber salad hit the spot. (I usually have the scallops but decided to try the steak. )The ice cream with caramel popcorn is to die for. The Whale's Rib never disappoints!!!
