The Desert of Maine is a weird and wonderful place. It is far more than just the 20 acres of rolling sand dunes in the middle of a lush forest. It has rich history going back to the 1800s, and it has been an iconic tourist destination in Maine for nearly 100 years. It is fun, educational, beautiful--well-suited for families with kids, history buffs, nature lovers, science nerds, and curious travelers. It has exhibits that explore the history, geology, and ecology of this fascinating place along with fun this to do like play mini golf, take a train ride, shop in 1930s era gift shop, or have an ice cream. The Desert of Maine campground offers adorable A-frame cabins that provide a comfortable and relaxing escape. The cabins are well-equipped with all the essentials, including a coffee maker, cookware, and utensils. The bathrooms, games, and camp store are also great amenities. Visitors can enjoy nearby activities such as shopping in Freeport, hiking at Bradbury Mountain State Park, or visiting local breweries. The overall experience is described as "adorable" and "enjoyable," with attention to detail and helpful staff.
The desert of Maine is pretty cool but tickets to get in are a little overpriced in my opinion. $21.00 for one adult is a little steep to get sand in your shoes, but the activities around the desert were cool, definitely more for children. Interesting location and history, nice hiking trails, good escape from the sun.
