I was in the Kennebunkport store with friends doing some pre prelude shopping. One friend was looking at the calendars that she buys either from Kate and Libby or Dana’s from Abacus every year. While in the store I asked her if she liked the one in Abacus. She replied that she did not like a couple of the images. At that point the employee came right over to us saying that my friend was very rude, that the owner of the gallery did the images and that we should leave if we were that rude. I was shocked. Apparently she didn’t understand that artwork is very subjective and beauty is in the eye of the beholder. It is safe to say we will never go in Abacus again.

Horrible service. Unfriendly and rude staff. Will spend my time and money elsewhere. Crotchety old biddies.

I’ve always loved Abacus Gallery! Similar to all the other reviews we were treated poorly since walking in. I’ve been to numerous nicer establishments that have offered to leave any drinks at the counter, the personnel up front told me I could leave my “drink behind a bush”.

The Abacus Gallery is a gift shop located in Dock Square that specializes in handcrafted goods. Some of my favorite items were the wave serving trays, wooden and stained glass mirrors, stained glass shell panels, fused glass coasters, phone holders, and sushi trays, dory bowls, duck umbrellas, and inspirational quote art. A family member purchased a wooden mirror!

I can't believe I'm the only reviewer for this place so far. Maybe once the tourists come through, that will change. Anyway, we love this place -- there's so much unique art made by various artists, in all kinds of mediums. It's one of the best shops in Kennebunkport.

This gallery has quite an eclectic collection of home decor, jewelry, Dana Heacock prints and calendars, and various arts and crafts. Their metal and tin crafts are very modern and unique. They have beautiful lamps. glassware, pottery, quality-crafted occasional tables and chairs in high-quality wood, and even several ukuleles. Their jewelry is stunning. If you've traveled throughout southern Maine, you've seen an Abacus Gallery -- they're also in Portland, Ogunquit, Freeport, and Boothbay Harbor.

This place has REALLY negative energy. It’s the most unwelcoming store in Kennebunkport. The ladies were rude from the moment we walked in. They were nasty to our 13And 10 yr old just because they were children. Yelled at us for having closed umbrellas , and followed us around, like we were going to steal something. The final straw was being sarcastically told to “have a nice day” ie; get out! Before I was actually even going to leave. Wow! I thought you wanted customers to spend time in the store, maybe even buy something! (Probably not, as everything was ugly and tacky anyway) bad business model! Never again! After leaving, we were warmly greeted by every other store and thanked for coming in, and we spent a FORTUNE that day too! What a shame…Do better Abacus!

Another visit mid-coast of Maine vacation, another stop at Abacus. The assortment of art and crafts is impressive for a touristy gift shop so set aside a little for a visit on you trip to KPT.

Ive been coming to Kennebunkport for 20 years and have been a loyal customer to Abacus, often buying something every time I visit. We were prepared to buy something for our new home until their very rude worker told us my 25 year old husband and his “lollipop” was not welcome inside the store. We respected their policy and left immediately, however, it was disappointing to be treated so rudely the second we walked in. A warm welcome would have been nice before being scolded on our vacation. It’s a shame because we were prepared to spend a good chunk of change but they’ve lost my business forever. Perhaps, learn to approach your customers with kindness before enforcing your ridiculous policy on a grown man.

Beautiful store! I am a past maine resident that now lives in MA and I always make a point to stop at one or more of the Abacus locations when I am visiting family in ME. It's a beautifully crafted store that basically feels like an art gallery where incredible items are for sale! Although the Kennebunkport location is one of the bigger stores, and they offer more higher-priced items that cater to the flow of tourists in the area... the customer service at this location is not very good. Upon entering I was stared down (not greeted). While I took my time looking around I saw a few people who appeared to be employees but I only assumed that because of the nice way they were dressed as well as the way each one stared be down every time we made eye contact. I smiled many times at the women that I knew were employees and did not get a simple smile back. I know it may seem silly but the act of smiling back to acknowledge someone's presence shows good customer service in my opinion. Not only did no one speak to me throughout my visit, but every time I looked up I noticed that I was being stared down by employees. I felt scrutinized and judged instead of welcomed. The behavior of the employees made me feel uncomfortable and I did not end up purchasing anything this time around. I have had many positive experiences with the nice staff at other Abacus locations. The Portland location has a wonderful selection of jewelry and their staff is knowledgeable although some are slightly stiff in their interactions. The employees in the Boothbay Harbor and Freeport locations have been friendly, helpful, and left a lasting positive impact on myself and my family who's visited with me. When looking around the store I know that employees are nearby for assistance but they have not made me feel as uncomfortable as the women in Kennebunkport did. The owners of Abacus do a wonderful job of selecting what goes into their stores. Someday I hope to own a Sticks bench to match the rest of my collection. They also have carried Ed Levin jewelry for as long as I can remember! Next time I am in Maine I'll save myself the trip and visit Abacus in Boothbay Harbor or Freeport. Abacus is an amazing Maine store so it is a shame for customer service to deter anyone from enjoying the magnificent craft, furniture, and jewelry that the Abacus stores offer. I highly recommend visiting an Abacus in Maine... perhaps just not this one.

Abacus Gallery is a great place to find unusual and beautiful gifts. They don't come cheap but are well worth the price.
