If you're a book lover and you're in the vicinity of beautiful Mount Vernon, ME, you need to make time for a visit to this fantastic, dream-like spot. The hour I spent at this little shed on a back road in central Maine was the best book buying experience I have had in years. Clean, organized, comfortable, and full of things I actually wanted! The fiction section is particularly well-stocked, but I found interesting things in practically every section. I go to a lot of bookstores and it's been a long time since I found so much good stuff in one place, and at extremely fair prices. I've been coming to this part of Maine for years and never knew it was here. I won't be making that mistake again!

My girlfriend and I were staying nearby and were looking for something to occupy our time on a rainy afternoon. As we are both bibliophiles she quickly found this as a nearby attraction and I happily agreed! When we got there we were pleasantly surprised by the remote nature of the location—a quaintly antique structure nestled amidst the stoic beauty of central Maine. We were greeted by the owner Don who happily gave us a tour and shelf-by-shelf overview of his merchandise. He then left us to bask in the glory of an incredibly well-curated collection. As we browsed the lines of floor-to-ceiling bookshelves we were amazed at the sheer variety of books we saw, and within twenty minutes we found a total of six books that we were ready dive into!Dan was unbelievably gracious and his hospitality was so refreshing—even taking the time to search for a book he thought might supplement one of my selections.Dan and The People’s Book Shop is a hidden gem in Maine. Absolutely worth a visit if you are ever in the area or simply in search of a unique bookstore.I’m positive you’ll find something you never knew you were looking for! Thanks again, Dan ?

Dan is a lovely guy that was totally accommodating to us. Great collection of books, from obscure to well known. He’s not in it for the profit, but the passing on of knowledge and wisdom that can come from reading great books. He has an especially impressive collection of books on climate, ecology, subsistence living, community building, and off-grid existence. Please go check out this great shop, you’ll be better for it!

This is a truly wonderful independent, owner run bookstore. It's not just the books but the experience. Dan can help you find that which suits your tastes for what you like to read. Don't miss it.

The definitional haven: a little house packed with an amazing selection of books, with friendly anticapitalist vibes. My friends and I stopped in while visiting this part of Maine for a wedding, and each of us came away with perfectly unexpected books to read. I can tell a lot of care goes into Dan's keeping of this place, and he does an amazing job.

This book store was not far from a camp I was working at for the summer. I love books and local book stores are the best. The owner was the sweetest guy and we discussed music, politics, books and life for a few hours. He has a huge variety for any book worm, coffee and classic rock to complete the experience. Highly recommend!

This is what a used bookstore should be: clean, well-organized, curated with an eye to quality and nicely lit. It's cozy and eclectic. Definitely worth a trip!

We stopped in, and were delighted to find it open. The posted hours are not always reliable: Dan had deferred opening the store until he had dealt with a skunk living under or near the building, if I understood him correctly. (My wife notes that she *thought* she smelled something skunk-like yesterday.) Dan welcomed us in, and his enthusiasm for reading good literature was infectious. We talked about authors, reading lists, and books on reading. He was more hospitable than he had to be, and I was grateful. He has an extensive selection of books, and will recommend books you might like if what you want isn't available—or even if it *is* on the shelf, he can tell you about authors you might like. The Peoples Book Shop is worth the visit, and we will be returning, if not on this trip, then next year, and the years after that, I hope.
