This place does charge premium pricing, but is well worth it to get in with Amanda. I go to her every few months for a regular facial, and she’s specific about improvements she sees in my skin and helps recommend not just products but routines and tips to help take care of it. It feels like a nice surprise every time I walk in and she remembers me, and I always leave with clear and hydrated skin. My only disappointment is that the prices don’t fit my college budget and if you’re looking for something for more value this wouldn’t be the place to go.

The reason for our poor rating is not the staff, everyone has been great. It’s not the salon as it is modern and clean – we’ve not had a complaint for the entire time that we’ve been customers. The reason for our rating is the owner, Jeffery. We have been loyal customers for just under 4 and half years and have spent over $12,000 with Akari over that period. We stayed loyal thru COVID, price increases and stylist changes, as many have left to other establishments. A couple of months ago, a new charge of $20 was enacted, if the stylist used the Dyson Airwrap. Previously, if the Dyson Airwrap was used, it was included in the price of the service. Upon learning of this, after we were charged, my wife requested to speak with Jeffery, this bothered her and she wanted to talk about it. This request was made multiple times. We know that the message was given, however Jeffery never contacted us. This is why the poor rating and the reason we are no longer customers after today (December 16, 2023).The issue at hand is not the $20 which my wife wanted to inquire about, which equates to only about $200/year - not an issue to pay. The issue is that the owner, Jeffery, for whatever reason, refused to engage in a conversation. After being a loyal customer for over 4 years, spending over $12,000 and never having a complaint, when we do have an issue, we deserve at a minimum, a response. This afternoon, as everyone else was saying goodbye to my wife, Jeffery was standing within feet, and still said nothing. The arrogance and disregard of Akari management and ownership of loyal customers is dumbfounding. While it pains us to no longer work with our stylists, who do a great job, we cannot in good conscience continue to patronize Akari. There are only so many customers in Maine. Would it hurt to call back a customer who has a concern? A customer that has been with you for over 4 years. A customer who has consistently spent over $3,000 annually with Akari?We have established a new relationship with a different salon, whose prices are the same and/or a bit higher than Akari’s for some services. This isn’t about the $20 for use of a Dyson Airwrap, this is about your contempt and scorn of a good customer, all because you (Jeffery) are too lazy and/or arrogant to pick up the phone and have a conversation.Curt & Sharon Burghardt

I had a disappointing experience at this high-end salon. The one specific request I had made was not delivered, and I am incredibly dissatisfied with the end result. I was given the impression that there was not enough time to make alterations at the end and left feeling rushed and unable to voice my opinion.Furthermore, after telling my stylist about my very personal struggles with self-image around my hair due to a medical condition, I was hopeful that the stylist would be prepared to handle it with more sensitivity and guidance and was let down on that front as well.Overall, I felt that my experience was misaligned with the salon's esteemed reputation. There's room for improvement in ensuring that clients feel valued and heard, especially given the premium pricing.

I had been looking for a new salon since moving to the area and hadn’t found one until I recently got my hair cut here. PeterJohn did a truly amazing job cutting my hair. 10/10 would recommend.

I saw Annie for a deep conditioning, blow out, and trim. My hair was in rough shape after using many products and Annie worked some serious magic! My hair feels brand new, silky soft, and wonderfully cut. Annie knew so much about various products and had great recommendations based on my type of hair. I got a last minute appointment with Ashley A. today, who saved the day. I don't have a stylist here in Portland, I didn't have a recommendation, I just went on the site blind ( I do get facials at Akari) and hoped for the best. My hair is thinning and coarse and was a wreck. I was at my wits end, and feeling terrible about my hair. I told her my concerns and 40 minutes later I came out with a great cut, and a great blow out. I learned a lot from watching her blow out my hair. I will def be going back to her moving forward, and really appreciate all she did with me coming in last minute and now knowing what I wanted or needed.Service: Haircut

Easily the best salon in Portland. Friendly, very skilled staff and gorgeous interior with stunning seasonal designs. Stacy is wonderful and a true expert at cutting and styling hair. I also love the products she recommended—they’ve transformed my hair! I can’t wait to go back for my next haircut!
