June 2021 by ML F.
I opened a checking account on May 12-2021 at the Annapolis West St. Branch. I was told that the checks would arrive the following week. I waited 10 days and nothing happened, no checks had arrived. I went to the Bank. The same person who opened the account told me now that it takes 7 to 10 business days for the checks to arrive. She seemed to be annoyed that I came in to the Bank and was quite rude and unapologetic for lying to me the first time. I waited three weeks, again nothing was happening, no checks arrived. This time I called the Main Branch. The person connected me with the rude employee again. The excuse was that the checks had the wrong address and were being re-printed. Today is June 3, 2021, which means that I have been waiting for the checks for 22 days. There is no communication with the Bank. Nobody lets me know what is going one. Not even a welcome note or "thanks for being a new customer." Is this a way to attract a customer? This is like the wild west, no etiquette, no manners. Marina F.

I had an account with a national bank and was feeling very disconnected from any real care and attention, so I switched to a hometown bank. So glad I did - the customer service is exceptional. Such great staff and products. I feel like they understand the importance of customer care.

Marcus Goerdt and the team at Severn Bank were a pleasure to work with from the loan application through the final settlement. I feel Marcus was invested in my making sure I had a full understanding of my option and the pro/cons associated. They moved quickly to lock in a great rate for me and were always available to take my calls. I highly recommend them for anyone looking to finance a home purchase.

I never been in this establishment, but I want to thank these heroes for having the time and temperature displayed 24/7 on the sign outside.

We used Severn Savings Bank Home Mortgage to refinance a jumbo loan in June, 2018. Our experience was very positive throughout the process. Mike Bass, our loan officer, presented us with multiple options and explained the pros and cons for each. He communicated promptly and frequently e-mailed and called with updates. The document process was OK because we were able to scan and e-mail almost all of what was needed by Severn and the mortgage underwriter. Everyone we dealt with was polite, professional, and helpful. We have no reservations in recommending Severn to assist you when you need to purchase or refinance a home. Steve and Laura B

I wish I read these reviews before working with Severn again. My first experience with them was great, and when I was contacted to re-finance, I thought it would also be a breeze. Unfortunately the agent I used is no longer with Severn and I should have seen this as a concern, but I went through anyway. Mike Bass was pushy, rushed, and overall rude. He made quick promises like covering the cost of appraisals, etc. and when it came down to it, left me completely hanging and having paid everything out of pocket myself. He makes promises that are illegal against his license and is in this only for whatever perks he can get from figuring out how to use/spend your money. He tries to paint an image that his title company will cover costs, but in the black and white it's all there from me the borrower, which I found out too late to address appropriately. Empty promises, crass demeanor, rushed processes, and overall rough person to work it. After MONTHS of e-mails and calls, there is still no resolution to this matter and Severn has no one else you can contact to move things along more quickly. Unfortunately he and this experience is the association I now have with this company that I formerly had a pretty good image of. I advise staying away.....far away.......

This review is about the mortgage department. So, I had been working with Severn Bank for a mortgage on a home I just bought at the beginning of May. They were aware of my closing date well over a month before, and had already prequalified me and basically had me almost set because I had been under contract on a home before the one that I am in finally. This is my 2nd home purchase, and on my last home purchase, I had used a local bank. The first home mortgage had gone so smoothly, I just basically handed in the paperwork, and all was good through closing. Local bank #2... was a complete disaster. First, they decided 3 days before the closing date that they needed to 'verify my employment.' This is after working with them for over two months. How did they not get all the information already? Granted my situation was less than traditional, but I was relocating while staying with the same company, and all the paperwork reflected this. Now, with the current rules, home buyers are required to received a closing disclosure (CD) 3 full days before closing. So this 'issue' coming up 3 days before closing means I did not receive my CD on time. So the next day I was on and off the phone with them, trying to resolve these issues, but to no avail. Finally, the day before I was supposed to close, I showed up to their office, and basically had to grease the wheels. Everyone, particularly people in management, were all full of promises. As someone in management and in healthcare, if I promise something, it happens. Not at Severn Bank. I was told when I left that the CD would be sent the next day, but it didn't happen. Finally, on Friday, the day after I was supposed to close originally, and the last day to receive a CD in order to make my newly rescheduled closing happen I was told that I would not receive the CD until the following Monday. Mind you, they guaranteed to my real estate agent that this reschedule was going to happen. After being quite explicit about how upset I was, and apparently needing to explain how many people in this transaction they were messing with, they finally said that they would pull a favor and get it done. So I finally get the CD that Friday. Mostly looked good, except they had put the wrong mortgage product on it. Come to find out, even after spending 2 months with the mutual understanding that I was getting a 10% down no PMI mortgage, someone on a committee 'decided' to change my product without contacting either myself or my mortgage representative. Mind you, I already delayed once, and in a competitive market, I couldn't request to delay for a full month, so I had to follow through. When I asked if they still had the mortgage product listed for future customers, they said yes! BEWARE! Seems like there are a lot of false promises at this bank.
