You get to play checkout worker and security worker for Safeway for free every trip. 24 hour opening won't ever come back. Pedestrian experience is just terrible.

I had a very unpleasant experience during my checkout. So, if you don't know (like me!) at this location, they have gates at the end of the self checkout area. Not knowing that the person must scan the receipt to activate the doors, I just expected them to read and open themselves, so I just pushed through. That's when the associate spoke in a derogatory manner to me and made me feel very uncomfortable. Her attitude should have been more understanding since she had to know by my reaction that this adjustment was new to me. I do get that having to deal with uninformed people can be taxing. However, there is no place for bad manners. Safeway has been my go-to market for reasonable, quality items, and it would be a shame to change my perspective.

I didn’t feel safe in the store. Recommend going with a bodyguard or don’t go at all!

Safeway used to be my favorite, but the new security gates are so annoying and it makes Safeway not worth the effort. It's a shame that stealing is a problem, but you can't punish the rest of us and assume we're going to put up with it. We have plenty of other places to shop.

I can't even with this place. I go here frequently as it's my neighborhood store. The manager here is rude. The employees are busy talking to each other or on their phones. Tonight, after attempting to get the attention of the man behind the service couter to no avail, I went to the self checkout isle for help. I couldn't get a coupon to come up on the app so I could clip it. I tried to wave someone over to help me. She ignored me, too. Then, when I tried to get someone else, she came over. She told me I couldn't get the price that was clearly marked. I told her I was pretty sure I could. Come to find out, I just wasn't trying to clip the right coupon. All in all, it was my mistake, but the lack of customer service is insane. Doesn't Safeway train employees on customer service?
So, the app is crazy. It's not easy to use. The coupon price doesn't come off until you are ready to pay, which is confusing, as the sell price will show. So, today, for example, the sale price was $4.99, and the coupon was for $2.99. You think the coupon didn't take because you clearly see the $4.99 sale price, but once you hit payment type or whatever, it takes it off.
Now, as you leave the self check, there is this glass door that one could easily run into. (I might have done just that last week when they first installed them). They look like they will automatically open, but no, you need to scan your receipt to get out.
There is also this loud voice that comes on over the speaker talking about something security. It's weird and uninviting for sure.
One thing I bought today was the 5 gallon exchanges. I had 4 in my cart. Once I got out of the security checkpoint, I mean self check I went to exchange my water bottles. The person I assume was the manager asked if I needed something in a kurt/annoyed tone. I let her know I did need the exchanges I just paid for. She let me by, and I did my exchange of these 5 gallon water bottles with no help! I turned to leave, and again, in an annoyed fashion, she told me I could do my exchange in the entryway. I let her know that's where they parked the scooters (why does she not know this), making it impossible to exchange there. Ugh, the worst part is that this is the closest grocery store for exchanges for miles, and I will have to be back. Maybe it's because we basically live in a food desert, so there no need for customer service because they know we will be back. Whatever it is, I loathe going here.
