This spot seems like a local institution. They had live music- two guitarists playing in the background. The atmosphere was perfect and the food was really tasty as well. The restaurant is underground with no windows but the murals and lighting make it seem as if you’re transported to Portugal. Overall, an older clientele but a lovely spot.Parking: There’s a free parking lot for customers to use.Wheelchair accessibility: There’s a ramp to enter the restaurant to accommodate those in wheelchairs.

High quality food and a really good brunch menu. Highly recommend the lasagna and some of the other brunch item menus. Drinks are good and parking is free.

It's always a welcome treat to indulge a bit on dinner with loved ones, even more so when your hosts put that extra effort into the experience. Such was our experience last night at Tavira—a wonderful evening, top to bottom. You'll learn a bit about Iberia's take on seafood (try the bacalhau jardinheira). Take their word on a good wine pairing, and try the 'pastéis de nata' for dessert to top off your meal!

I had not been in a while and went last week with another couple. Everyone loved their meals. I had the rockfish, which was very fresh and perfectly cooked. I plan to start going more regularly. An advantage in winter is the parking, which is covered, connected to the restaurant, and free.

Great meal. Definitely go for the three course meal. Everything was fantastic. Waiter had what seemed to be four pages of the daily menu specials memorized.Restaurant was a little difficult to find at night, as the entrance is located in the bottom of the parking garage.

Tavira is unfortunately a typical DC restaurant with low quality, untasty, overpriced food. Pluses: good service, OK ambient. But food is a disgrace. We had calamary, mussels as apetizers; daily choice of fish and veal scallopini as main dishes. All four dishes had no taste. I wonder if the chef ever eats what she/he cooks. But again, there are hundrends or this kind of restaurants in DC unfortunately and people who have never been abroad and have never tried real food give high rating to restaurants that should be out of business

Have been dining at Tavira for years and love it. Spectacular Portuguese food, excellent service and a comfortable location.High points here include the tempting array of specials — a wide variety of thoughtful seafood and meat dishes and, if you’re not in the mood for the specials, the 3-course prix fixe dinner ($38 as of late 2023 and an excellent value.) The standard a la carte menu can be rewarding, too. Recent winners have included the grilled squid appetizer and swordfish steak specials. The pork shank (available on the prix fixe and a la carte menus) is one of my favorites, as is the iconic clams and chorizo appetizer. Desserts are light and delicious — save room. The servers at Tavira are experts at presenting the list of specials with drama and delivering each course with impeccable timing. Service is thoughtful and attentive. The location is quirky: in the basement of an office building on Connecticut Avenue in Chevy Chase Lake. But tables are well-spaced, the dining area is comfortable and the atmosphere is relaxing.Highly recommended.

Unfortunately, this was not a good experience. My Bacalhau a la grelha was not tasty, with fishbone and raw skin. The price was higher for the quality of the food. Burrata was good also the cocktail Gin Tonic. The Pudim de Leite was not good either.

Another wonderful experience at Tavira. The waiter was attentive and informative. The meal was nicely prepared and served hot. Also, there was a nice choice of wines, many of them reasonably priced.

Really good Portuguese restaurant (mainstay since 1999) with a great ambiance that offers primarily a fish and meat menu that should appeal to most. It’s a flexible menu bc there’s the regular menu as well as two separate 3-course menus ($35 taste of Portugal and $27). I ordered a Iberian mixed seafood that came on a vertical skewer over a bed of saffron rice. The monkfish entree was good but in both cases the portions were a tad small. The pork shank dish on the $27 menu was a bit gamey though the osso bucco style pork was massive over linguini. I observed that the presentation of each dish was well done. Desserts were perfect. Even a vanilla ice cream was decorated and accentuated and the chocolate mousse was rich and tasty. The waitstaff were attentive and we had great service even though one of the salad orders was wrong. There is free validated parking in the lower level of the building that conveniently feeds you right into the restaurant.
