When I see all of the reviews about the bullying, employees not caring about people injuring themselves in standing water, employees being jerks just to be jerks, overcrowding, sub-par facilities, I am not suprised. I just quit my membership because the apathy and attitude and overcrowding is just too much to bear. The attitude is, what do you expect for the price? They consider it a CHARITY GYM and they are doing you a favor for giving you such a good deal and you should just shut up and be grateful. Dirtiest water I have ever seen in the warm pool, and the ambiance is horrible as is hasn't gotten a coat of paint in decades. I mentioned to someone at my place of work, that I had a Y membership, and the first thing they said was "the thing I hate about the Y's is that they use so much chlorine." Yes, so much it will burn your eyes and lungs and skin. But, just be glad they are giving you subsidized swimming experience and learn to live with it. Update: Response below is double-speak. I spoke to two different "managers" on different occasions, one was a teen or early 20s, who said "yeah, we know, we get complaints like that" and proceeded to zone out into space. The pool is unpainted. The water is soupy and cloudy. I quit going because it was way too crowded, which they are painfully aware of but gloss over. Cholorine in a pool is NOT supposed to burn your eyes (even with goggles), skin, and lungs to the point that it is painful. I guess you get what you pay for. It is gov't subsidized. I stand by my assessment that the attitude there is, "well, what do you expect?" Look at the preponderance of 1 star reviews and don't feign surpise when you see another one.

YMCA in Ellicott City is a great place to work out: the employees are very friendly and helpful, the exercise programs it provides are plenty and serves different needs, and the fellow Y members are fun to be with.

My recent experiences at the Y Center in Ellicott City have been far from satisfactory. Despite being a paying member, I encountered several issues that significantly marred my visits, particularly concerning the swimming pool facilities.
Firstly, one of the most frustrating aspects was being denied entry to the swimming pool due to purported overcrowding. In reality, the pool did not seem excessively crowded, yet management cited this as a reason for restricting access. Furthermore, despite claims that three lanes would be available, only two were open during my visits. This inconsistency reflects poor planning and management on the part of the facility.
Another concerning observation was the apparent lack of adequate staff, especially lifeguards. The few lifeguards present were not only insufficient in number but also exhibited unprofessional behavior. Their demeanor was often rude, and they seemed indifferent to ensuring a pleasant experience for members. This attitude is unacceptable, particularly in an environment where safety and customer service should be paramount.
Moreover, the decision to partition the swimming pool with vertical dividers further compounded the issues. This setup made swimming challenging and uncomfortable, detracting significantly from the enjoyment and utility of the pool area. It suggests a disregard for the convenience and experience of paying customers.
Overall, my interactions with the Y Center in Ellicott City have left me deeply disappointed. The facility's management appears to prioritize cost-cutting over providing a positive and accommodating experience for members. As a result, I cannot recommend the Y Center in Ellicott City as a suitable place for families or individuals looking for a reliable and enjoyable recreational venue. Potential patrons should be aware of these shortcomings before committing to membership.
In conclusion, the Y Center in Ellicott City has failed to meet basic expectations in terms of service quality, staff professionalism, and facility management. It is my hope that these issues are addressed promptly to improve the overall experience for all patrons.

I love the Y! Fifty years ago I learned to swim at the Y in downtown Baltimore. Today, the Y continues to play an important part in my life. I love the community, variety of exercise classes and equipment, and the friendly staff.

We had signed up for a free trial. We went in once but my son didn't like the courts. We never got any confirmation emails, membership IDs, or reminders of our membership. About two years later we realized they were still charging us even though we cancelled and never used their facility except that one time. When we asked for a refund and offered to compromise and pay for a few months, instead of showing courtesy the guy said they were running a business for profit and accused us of lying. Not in line with their vision and mission to say the least! Very disappointed.

This is the best membership our family could have this summer. There is something for everything in our family. The kids spend time at stay and play with a well organized kids area and kind staff while I work out. Then we have done the pool, kids exercise and sports classes, and got my butt kicked in the adult classes. I highly recommend getting a membership. It’s worth it.

I recently had a concerning experience that I feel obligated to share. During my visit yesterday (Sunday @4:30), I encountered a significant pool of water in main hallway near the gym entrance and locker room entrance, which had not been properly attended to. There was no Caution sign or anything else. Unfortunately, this led to a slip and fall where I landed very painfully on my knees. What was particularly disappointing was the response from the staff. When I brought the incident to their attention, instead of showing concern for my well-being, the response was dismissive with a casual "ya ya ya", without any inquiry into my condition or offering assistance. This lack of empathy and disregard for basic customer care was deeply unsettling. As a member who values safety and expects a standard of maintenance this experience fell far short of expectations. I hope this feedback prompts a reevaluation of safety protocols and customer service training to prevent such incidents in the future.
