Jamaica Plain is a funky, diverse neighborhood south of downtown Boston. It is home to an increasing number of trendy cafes and bars, some of which command hefty prices. Fortunately, this time-honored, multi-purpose fixture remains a neighborhood favorite. You walk into a classic 'luncheonette' set-up with red booths and a counter. Continue straight ahead and you are in a medium-sized food market with a substantial liquor department, complete with an impressive array of craft beers. At the counter I have only had pizza so far, and it's a treat. $2.25 gets you a huge slice of New York style thin-crust pizza that I would recommend over several more famous Boston pie purveyors. Coworkers swear by the breakfasts and sandwiches, all of which are generous and reasonably priced. Basically, Ruggiero's is a terrific overall value with a refreshingly old-school layout.
