I’ve been going to Amanda Johnson for 5 years now, and she is hands down the best colorist I’ve ever had. She works quickly (which I love), but the results are always amazing—my color looks so natural and it grows out beautifully, so my roots are never super noticeable.
On top of being incredibly talented, she’s also just the nicest person. She’s fun to chat with, easy to spend time with, and always makes the whole experience enjoyable. I actually look forward to my appointments!
If you’re looking for someone who does beautiful, natural color and is a joy to be around, she’s the one.

Another reviewer commented the new location is charming and comfortable. In my opinion it is not. The seating area is decorative and extremely uncomfortable. Area in between there and the wash area is like a maze and if you don't look out you will run in to people. Plus the fact multiple visits there I have seen dogs unleashed sitting on furniture. This is so unsanitary, clients need to leave the dogs at home. I greatly preferred and miss the 9 location. It was easier and everything was better including the reason you go for the services. I only went to one person for my color but I had to wait 5 months last time for her. I gave up and decided to see David at the Seaport location. He was fantastic. Now I see he is not on the website for bookings? a loss if he has left the salon

I’m in my mid-thirties and I went in for a haircut as a first-time client last year, and my experience with the stylist was so hurtful that I still think about it. Somehow how my age came up, and she asked if I was married or have kids, which I’m not and do not. She was a little bit older than I am and had young children of her own. For the rest of the appointment, no matter the subject, she wouldn’t stop momsplaining and patronizing me for not having kids. Apparently you can’t understand anything in this life unless you’re a mother—but what if I had miscarried or was infertile? I wanted to get up and leave so badly, but she was literally cutting my hair, so I just had to sit there while she made relentless passive-aggressive remarks about how naive I am because I don’t have children, and how much perspective I would gain if I had them. I left in tears. Motherhood is a privilege not all of us know, but our lives still have meaning and our perspective still has value. The salon itself is nothing special. It’s just in a nice part of town.

Firstly, Lance color corrected a terrible highlight job I had done at a different salon and gave me the exact color I was looking for. Violet then did a phenomenal job color matching my real hair with my extensions and placed the tape-in extensions perfectly. The day after I left the salon I decided I wanted the extensions to be a bit shorter and the receptionists squeezed me in day-of and Alesandro cut my hair and he gave me exactly what I was looking for. I couldn't be happier with my overall experience at this salon and am very relieved to have found a fantastic salon I can rely on!

I’m aware that Mario Russo is a salon of well-trained stylists and it was even recommended to me by my mother, who has curly hair herself, though it’s much more fine than my own. I had an appointment to have my 3c type hair blown out and flat ironed a couple months ago, and unfortunately it was not a good experience. I believe my stylist’s name was Violet. As soon as I got in the chair, it was clear to me that the stylist was not equipped to work with hair such as my own, as she immediately started brushing my hair out while partially dry and was making no effort to prevent breakage or protect the curls. I felt like a dog at the groomer’s with the way she was using the brush to pull at my hair any which way from the roots/surface, rather than working upward from the ends. She then barely blew it out and even attempted to use the flat iron while it was still damp/partially curly in multiple areas, which is when I stopped her and asked her to go back in with the blow dryer. She seemed offended by this request and by my other questions/explanations regarding how to work with my hair. I’m very skilled at blowing out my own hair but wanted the ease of having someone else do it for me that day, so I was confident in what I was talking about. In the end, my hair was still very puffy and I left feeling quite terrible about my hair, the style, and the customer service experience as a whole. If you’re going to market yourself as a salon that can work with all, then make sure that your stylists are well-trained with all hair types or at least are able to handle critiques/pointers from guests who know their own hair. Would not reccomend that curly-haired people visit this salon until they attain stylists who can work with more than 1a-2c hair.

Juston helped me fix a haircut from another studio and did so with ease. We talked about his trips where he’s stayed up to date on the latest styles and techniques to offer such a premium service. I would strongly recommend him for your next cut!

By far THE WORST experience I've EVER in my life had at a salon. I went in asking for blonde highlights, but instead, the stylist, Lance Collins, used an outdated technique, taking very thin strands of my hair and dyeing them a dull grey. Now I look like an old lady instead of having the bright, natural blonde look I wanted.
He completely ignored what I asked for, and in the process ruined my long, healthy, silky brown hair. Because the strands are already bleached, I can’t fix it without risking even more damage. Going back to brunette won’t undo the harm that’s already been done.
Do not trust him with your hair. This was a total disaster, and I regret ever walking into that salon. Never forget that they also charged me $175 for a blowout without even informing me prior to that.
If you want damaged botched hair, Mario Russo is the place to go. Moreover, Lance is the person who will help you ruin it. And let me add to that, the people there are extremely rude and secretive and whisper all the time about how much to charge you, sometimes they upcharge for no reason, there is almost no transparency with the customer and all you get is weird rude vibes and behavior from them there. The only person I liked there was Kritzia. Thank you.
Here are images of the exact color I asked for and the result I got.

Hello Anna
I just want to sincerely thank you. You knew I was upset you listened, truly understood what I needed, and worked your magic. You not only gave me a beautiful result, but you made me feel heard, cared for, and so much better when I walked out. Your talent goes far beyond just doing hair you have a real gift for making people feel good inside and out.💕
I’m so grateful for you. Thank you for everything.

I never write reviews—but this was, without question, the worst salon experience of my life. I regularly visit high-end salons around the world, and nothing compares to the disorganization, unprofessionalism, and outright chaos I witnessed here.
From the moment I walked in, it was a disaster. The receptionist was audibly chewing gum like she was at a sleepover, another had her leg propped up on the front desk, and two stylists were carrying on loudly with zero regard for the atmosphere. Multiple guests were visibly upset—one even in tears—complaining about botched color jobs.
I was referred by a respected luxury salon, who has since told me they will never send another client here again. Apparently this place had a good reputation years ago, but based on what I experienced (and overheard from others), it’s been riding on outdated hype. The quality is gone. The service is gone. The professionalism never even showed up.
They destroyed my hair, ignored everything I asked for, and left me scrambling to get it corrected elsewhere. Do yourself a favor: protect your hair, your money, and your sanity—and go anywhere else.

Your hair will never be in hands safer than Alesandro’s. Each time I’ve come to him with a Pinterest delusion, he’s been able to tailor my inspiration pictures to work with my face shape and hair texture. To say the least, his work is brilliant and I always leave delighted with the results.
I also have to commend the front desk staff for their kindness. The salon is well-kept and I look forward to returning.

I had such an amazing experience at Salon Mario Russo. Gabby is an amazing manager who made me feel welcomed and appreciated it. My stylist, Justin , did such an amazing job styling my hair and providing insight and tips on how to style. Huge kudos to Gabby, Justin, and the whole team! You’re all rockstars!

FIVE STARS FOR Lee Combs! I have been around the block over the years! Up and down Newbury Street and I am very picky! Lee is hands down the best hairstylist I’ve ever been to! Her precision, technique, and her attention to detail are unmatched. It is a dream to have her cut my hair and her blow drys are the best I have ever had. Lee brought my cut to life flawlessly—better than I even imagined! The cut was perfect, stylish, beautiful, and suited me perfectly. Her haircuts grow out perfectly! On top of that, Lee is professional, friendly, and really listens to what you want. If you're looking for the best haircut experience, look no further than Lee Combs. Highly recommend!
