Lovely historical site with very knowledgeable and enthusiastic docents. I'm looking forward to visiting again. A great spot to connect with Unitarian history and Transcendental American philosophy.

The Old Manse is packed with both literary and revolutionary history, making it one of the more important historical homes in the US. If you're a fan of US history, Emerson, Hawthorne, and even (to a lesser extent) Thoreau, the Old Manse is a place worth visiting.

About The Old Manse
The ancestral home of the famous Emerson family in the 254 year old museum home filled with the family's heirlooms. Home to two revolutions beginning in 1775 where the shot heard 'round the world was fired on Rev. William Emerson's land. Two generations later, his grandson, Ralph Waldo Emerson, wrote Nature and launched the American Transcendental movement. From which came movements that shaped a nation - abolition, equal rights, public education, conservation. Nathaniel Hawthorne called The Manse home for three years beginning in 1842 and wrote his first commercially successful book, Mosses From an Old Manse.
