Doane Rock Picnic Area

Hours: Doane Rock Picnic Area is a lovely and best-equipped free parking area close to Coast Guard Beach at the Cape Cod seashore. It features several covered picnic shelters, shaded picnic tables, grills, and clean flush toilets with filtered water. The main attraction is Doane Rock itself, a really big and unique glacial erratic boulder that is the kind of rock kids enjoy climbing on. The area also includes a memorial to the Doane pilgrim homestead. From the parking, a nice easy walk of about 3/4 mile on a loop trail leads to the beach, going over a picturesque marsh on a pretty bridge and through woods with classic Cape Cod shrubs. However, visitors should be prepared for mosquitoes, which can be crazy thick, as well as horse flies and ticks. Strong bug spray is recommended. The path to the beach can be a bit hard to find. Overall, it is a great place to park for the shore and a good spot for a picnic, though the insects can be a significant nuisance.
