“Madison and her organization is a wonderful one! She sent Lucy a trampoline, which is something she always had and used! Until it popped a year ago. Lucy and big sis, Remi have been having so much fun! Not only is it good for the soul, but it’s also good for movement! Thank you again Strong Little Souls! We are forever grateful for y’all!”
“Michael Platt, my brother with Down syndrome, lived and worked at Leander House from 2001 to 2018. These last seventeen years of his life were his happiest and most rewarding. Here, at Leander House, he found a family after our father and mother were too advanced in years to take care of him.
Leander House provided a welcoming home that gave Michael structured activities that were new and exciting for him. He took part in art activities at CATA, had eurythmy classes at a local church, rode horses in equine therapy at a nearby stable, visited museums in the Berkshires, and attended concerts at Tanglewood and dance performances at Jacob’s Pillow. He shared nutritious meals with a diverse group of residents. He became fast friends with Tanner, the Leander House golden retriever. Every summer he would go with the other residents to camp for a week on a beach in Rhode Island. Three times a week he would work at a weavery and found fulfillment in making beautifully woven placemats, which I and my family still use. This highly structured and stimulating environment was all part of his Leander House experience.
But what Leander House provided, and what was far more important than all these confidence-building and enriching activities, was the fact that here Michael was loved deeply and cared for with an abiding respect for him as an individual. During his seventeen years at Leander House, Jennie Reins and the many wonderful co-workers loved Michael and became his family. Several of the co-workers kept in touch with Michael and would visit him after their year in the States had come to an end. My family and I are boundlessly grateful for the truly golden decade and a half when Michael called Leander House his home.

“As it’s name suggests, the Abode is a home for all people. It is the beating heart with wings through which a human being can become aware of how much they are connected to all things. natural beauty of a land it sits upon can alone bring one to the entrance of Infinity. Yet the one thing that makes this place so special, so separate, and such an incredible light are the people that you will meet there. Whether you wander up on a sleepy Wednesday morning and just say hello to some of the resident workers or you go for an event such as the Dances for Universal Peace, you will meet people, true of heart, who have come for one simple thing; to reconnect with their soul, with all of nature, with existence itself. This place is worth saving, this place is worth everything.”
“I’m a care giver, and you wouldn’t believe the hoops i have had to jump through to get a single thing from doctors and insurance for the elderly woman I care for. I found UCP while researching programs to help I stumbled on UCP. Hazel, an angle literally doing the lords work has gone above and beyond to help in anyway she can. The lady I care for needed a Gerri chair (impossible to find) she went above and beyond calling nursing homes hospitals and I’m sure many others. She found one and had it delivered straight to her house!! I have met few people in my life time that have been so kind and helpful. God broke the mold when he made Hazel! truly! Thank you so much to the team at UCP. An amazing group of people all around! There’s not enough thank you’s in the world to show my appreciation. This program gives people hope that they can receive the medical equipment they need when their doctors and insurance company’s don’t come through! and to speak with someone you can tell puts her all into her work in helping people makes a stressful journey, pleasant. Thank you thank you thank you!”
