I had a deeply unsettling experience at the Medford AutoZone. I went in to check a check engine alert after having my car jumped, suspecting it might be battery-related but wanting to ensure there were no other issues. From the moment the employee started looking at my car, I got a bad feeling. He barely looked at the battery, didn’t run an engine check, and immediately insisted I needed a new battery. Strangely, the next AutoZone I visited told me the charge was at 99%.
When I asked how much the battery would cost, he quoted around $200 but then said he’d “give me a discount” if I paid him personally to install it, asking if I had Venmo to send him $20-30 directly. This felt unprofessional and suspicious, but as it was getting late, I reluctantly agreed since I needed my car for work the next morning.
As he began working, his behavior became increasingly concerning. He complained non-stop about the cold, how he doesn’t get paid enough, how this was a “$100 job,” and even that he was wearing his “nice sweater” and didn’t want to get dirty. When we discovered the airbox needed to be removed to access the battery, he tried to watch a YouTube video on how to do it but continued griping about the time and effort involved.
Eventually, I told him to re-secure the battery so I could go somewhere else. He dropped a bolt during this process and outright refused to retrieve it, leaving me with a poorly secured battery.
I understand that AutoZone is not a mechanic shop, but the level of customer service was appallingly poor. If I were the owner, I’d be extremely concerned about employees soliciting personal payments for what is supposed to be a free installation service with a purchase. Additionally, the lack of professionalism and basic courtesy was shocking.
Unfortunately, I can’t provide his name as he wasn’t wearing a name tag, but this occurred between 4:40-6:00 PM on 1/5/25. I strongly recommend addressing these issues to prevent similar experiences for other customers. I am writing this under my back up google account because I do not want to leave my name.

Put on hold twice. Sum total of 12 minutes (told “just a moment “). So I can’t speak to parts, but service is literally non existent.

Disrespectful staff member had a total meltdown when my husband very innocently asked about a deal on a sign for some oil and an air filter. I was disgusted at the mistreatment of my husband. This cashier seemed like he hated life and just wanted to take it out on someone and that was my husband today. We went to somerville autozone after this abuse and the cashier there was extremely kind and helpful.

Couldn’t get battery even by ordering from Advanced, just excuses, so I went to AutoZone and got it immediately and for lower cost.
