The Custom House Maritime Museum, in the heart of downtown Newburyport and on the banks of the Merrimack River, invites visitors of all ages to experience and be inspired by the region’s millennia-long maritime heritage through exhibits in 8 refurbished galleries along with a new STEM-focused Discovery Center for children. An expansive collection beautifully illustrates the importance of global maritime commerce during the 18th and 19th centuries culminating with the Clippers, along with its legacy in shipbuilding and naval history, while highlighting the birthplace of and honoring the United States Coast Guard today. All is housed in a stunning 1835 architectural masterpiece designed by John Mills, architect of the Washington Monument.
