I had an unpleasant experience with a staff member at this store. While shopping and doing my own price comparison, this older bald male staff member approached me and told me I was being rude and offensive by comparing prices to other online retailers. I was actually going to purchase these (over $200) shoes from this store for $10 more than this online retailer to support this business, but instead I left. Though I appreciate this employee’s frustration that customers enter their store, try shoes on but choose not to buy. It is the customer’s RIGHT to compare prices to competitors. I feel this employee could have found a more tactful way to express his opinion, a kinder approach, instead of being angry. I have purchased multiple pairs of shoes at this location over the years and I will no longer be doing so.

This store is run by employees who are bullies, and a store owner who condones it and participates. Because of this, and because there is not a pair of shoes in the place that is under $100, I have no explanation as to why these people are still in business. My experience there was nothing short of bizarre. I went in last weekend to shop for a pair of shoes. I was ready to buy several pairs if I found ones that were comfortable. I have been suffering from plantar fasciitis for about a year and a half and it's very hard for me to find shoes, so I was excited to go to a place that carried so many supportive brands. I made a stack of about seven boxes of shoes that I liked and started to try them on. A male employee came up to me- I thought maybe to help it to ask how I was doing but no- and said in a snide voice, "So I'm just curious, you know that employees have to put the shoeboxes away, so why do you get so many pairs to try on? Why don't you just try one on and then put it back?" I said, I needed to try on a lot of pairs because I have foot problems. I was also going to explain to him that it was my birthday, and I planned to treat myself to several pairs, that's why I had so many choices. But he interrupted me and said, "yeah yeah yeah we all have foot problems, but why do you have to do this? I'm just curious." Honestly, it was so odd and inappropriate- before I realized he was an employee, based on the confrontational way that he was speaking to me as a total stranger, at first it made me wonder if he was somebody with mental illness. When I realized that he was actually an employee, speaking to me as a customer, I was shocked and intimidated, but then I remembered that nobody has the right to speak to someone that way. So I took a deep breath and said, "you know, sir, I actually don't think you're curious. I think you're berating me in public and telling me how to shop at your store when I've been coming here for years. I always put my boxes away, and I have spent hundreds of dollars here. so what exactly are you trying to achieve?" He seemed surprised that I wasn't just cowering, and he eventually walked away. I asked another guy to direct me to a manager, and he told me that he was the owner. Before I could start to tell him what happened, he cut me off and said, "yeah, my employee already explained what happened,." His tone was totally condescending and he started boxing up my shoes, which I was not yet done trying on, as he was talking at me. I told him that I've been a loyal customer for years, and how much what his employee did upset me, and he condescendingly brushed it off, and was like, "I see that you are very upset by this, I've already apologized, if you don't want to shop here anymore, that's your prerogative." I've never been treated so rudely in my life, and I never plan to step foot in here again. To top it all off, it was my birthday, and I left so embarrassed that I was shaking and crying. I've seen a lot of reviews on here that mention this kind of customer service experience, and I just cannot understand why somebody trying to sell things thinks that they can treat people like this.

My family has been shopping at The Barn for 60 years, possibly longer and I have always had great luck finding shoes, sandals, boots & even clothes on occasion. Not only was the selection great but the service/help being fit and or selecting a shoe was always outstanding. My how times have changed. I took my elderly mom in a few days ago and it likely will be the last time. The owner was edgy, quick, rude and extremely unhelpful. Whipping boxes on and off shelve, sliding cartons, and had such a BAD ATTITUDE. I have a VERY high tolerance for people and as a small business owner myself give people the benefit of the doubt but his demeanor continued to be nasty the entire time we were there. I felt horrible for my mom who was having a hard time finding a shoe that didn't hurt her toes and I could tell she was getting uncomfortable by his manner. If he doesn't have patience to work with elderly people or people with difficult feet he should either pass the job on to someone else in the store or find a new business to be in. I have never written a bad review for anything or anyone - but this experience was beyond upsetting.

Went in on Wednesday late morning. Staff wasn't helpful or friendly. Nobody greeted us or asked us if we needed help. Other people in the store were being treated like 1st class citizens and nobody would even make eye contact with us. There were a bunch of people working and not one person was nice. They were rude and cold. I had a question about a shoe that was on clearance and it had a bunch of marks on the leather. They stated it wasn't on clearance because of these marks, rather it was the last pair in that style. I stated that the shoe in the box was in perfect condition but the display shoe was scuffed and scratched. When I questioned if they thought it would buff out the sales woman at the register (middle age with dirty blonde hair) acted annoyed by my question and stated if I want something without scuffs or scratches on the leather I would have to get the shoes right off the truck. Not true!!!They said eventually they would get scratched over time. If I scratched them that's one thing, but to buy new shoes that are already scratched or scuffed with no markdown because of that is crazy. Staff is extremely unprofessional and rude. Would not recommend! This store and staff have gone downhill! Not a welcoming environment.

I just left the store, and it was such an unpleasant experience. The only staff member who was even remotely kind and listened to what I needed was Luke. Two other men (one of which was barely college aged) were rude, impatient, and barely let me talk. The staff need a serious attitude check, otherwise they will drive out all their customers, and it won’t be because of the shoes.

Not a wide selection of large sizes. Also, Danny was harsh and disrespectful. After knowing I had a physical therapist he gestured towards my bad foot, kicking it, and then denied it. He probably did not intend to kick it, but he did.He was just so off-putting and condescending that I will never shop there again after I found out he is the owner.

Linda's great w/kids, especially my 8y with special needs (he wears a brace on one foot/leg) and is also quite rambunctious... Linda is so patient, kind, goes to the extra mile to search for inventory that they might have in the back because she knows it's hard for us to find shoes that fit. Just wished that there was more Extra Wide and Extra Extra Wide inventory for wide feet and also those who wear leg braces!

About two weeks ago I was getting my car cleaned so I went for a walk in newtonville while I waited. I found myself in the Barn just looking around- I wasn’t there 5 minutes when I noticed an employee was following me. I kept walking around the store and said person kept moving where I moved to each time so I decided to make eye contact and they couldn’t look away fast enough. So they definitely confirmed my suspicions that I was being followed in the store. Maybe newtonville doesn’t get many brown shoppers in this store but this was uncalled for! And they didn’t try disguising it either

They have a wide selection of 2nd tier brand shoes - no Nike / Adidas / Reebok - but they have timberland, Merrell, sketchers, new balance, teva, keen. Came for adventure sandals with toes - left with pairs for my self and my girl - prices were a little on the expensive side and I think I came at the wrong time of year to get the best selection - but out of all the places around me they had the best selection. Ended up very happy with my purchases.

Prices are not cheap. Lots of athletic shoes. But the trendy colors in large sizes and trendy shapes are sparse.

A good place to get uncommon shoe brands. The salespeople are generally very knowledgeable and friendly.

I have been shopping here for 25 years. I have never returned anything before, I brought in 3 items to return or get a store credit. I was treated like a common criminal, I was so embarrassed by the manager. It's the only store I buy my husband's shoes at, and you would have thought I was trying to pull something over these people. The woman doing the return was rude, and condescending! I've never been impressed by the customer service here. You would never get a hello or greeting, but I did not shop there to make friends. After all the years of being a loyal customer, spending 4 to 500.00 at a time, one would think more of their dedicated patrons

I bought a nice, EXPENSIVE pair of Timberland boots about 3 months ago. For some strange reason after only two months, one of the work boots, had a leak of some sort, and my foot was getting soaking wet. Well I called and spoke with Brendan , I explained the whole situation, brought in the boots in the box and I was allowed to swap them out for a different pair of Timberland boots. Brendan went above and beyond to help me not only swap the boots out, but actually took the time, and he found something that would better suit my needs. AWESOME customer service!! 5 stars all day long for me!!!! Highly recommend the Barn!
