Years ago my car at the time failed inspection due to a compromised exhaust pipe. I had been planning on upgrading to a custom exhaust setup anyways and decided to replace everything from the engine to the tailpipe. I lived in Tewksbury at the time & had heard good things about R&D. I came in and received a consult &
estimate for the work. I remember the prices were reasonable & staff was friendly/knowledgeable.
The day of my appointment came and I dropped the car off. I got a call a little while later from the owner telling me that there was too much oil on the exhaust up near the engine and that they didn’t want to start a fire with all the welding they needed to do. He told me I needed to get an “underbody wash” at a car wash before they could do any work on it. He even went as far as to give me a list of car washes in the area that offer the best underbody washes. Really above & beyond customer service.
After the car wash he was able to fit me right back in to their busy schedule that same week & I dropped it off again. A few minutes after dropping it off he called me and told me to come in so he could show me something. I got back to R&D and he brought me out to the shop where my car was on the lift. He showed me a small spot on my engine block (not the drain pan) where the original oil leak was coming from. He told me to gently press the spot with my finger. I did and the spot was flexing! So many layers of metal had rusted & fallen off over the years that the spot was practically paper thin and oil was actually seeping THROUGH the metal (there was no actual hole yet). He said I was going to need a new engine in less than a few months and he couldn’t in good conscience install an exhaust on an old car that was about to be totaled without checking with me first.
R&D could have easily taken my money, installed my exhaust, and walked away. Instead they did the right thing every step of the way even though it ended up costing them a sale. Honesty & integrity like this are rare nowadays, especially in the auto industry. So rare that my interaction with R&D has stuck with me all these years and I decided to finally write this review. I obviously can’t speak to this shop’s workmanship (although I’ve heard it’s excellent) but I CAN say that without a doubt, R&D is a business you can trust…and that’s saying something these days.

The flex pipe on my exhaust broke on my way home. I stopped into R&D thinking I'd would have to leave the car and I could walk home. They were able to get it right in and fix my car right away. Great service and friendly staff

Excellent customer service from the front desk. I'm very pleased with their hospitality, patient with me & respectful. They answered all my questions and fully resolved the issues with my vehicle and within just a few hours ! I'd recommend for everyone to get their vehicle serviced by R & D custom Exhaust ! Outstanding work to the fellas in the shop. They handled my vehicle with the upmost care . Thank you !

Describe R&D in one word. Honest. I had a loud exhaust was referred to R&D by a local Woburn mechanic. They replaced a small pipe for $100 that the Ford dealer cost was over $250 without labor. I was prepared to have buy a new muffler from the dealer. A&D completed the job in less than 30 minutes. Excellent service.

They do good work but they are not cheap, not even reasonable. Recently I had some work done to my car and they charged 6 hours of labor while another mechanic did the exact same thing in 1 hour. They will never see me again.

Called at 8:30am on a Monday morning with an unscheduled exhaust repair. Vehicle was repaired by 10:30am at a very reasonable price. A pleasure to deal with.
