We got off the bus in P-town on a very hot and very, very muggy afternoon and my English Teacher wife looked up just a couple of steps from MacMillan Pier. She said "let's check out the library." I was skeptical, but she sealed the deal with the aside: "It's got to be air conditioned." Met at the door by a friendly librarian who asked "are you here to see the ship?" I responded, truthfully, "No . . . we're here for the air conditioning." He chuckled and said, "head upstairs, you are going to be amazed."We were. Wow. Who would have thought they'd stuffed a HUGE sailing vessel in the old church turned library. Yeah, the air conditioning was a great respite from the oppressive heat, but this is one cool library. Check it out, read the history, marvel at the ship-in-a-bottle type trick these folks have pulled with the ship and check out a book or two. Well worth the time for a visit.

Someone on the street told us about this place. Beautiful OLD library, and they have a 1/2 scale boat inside. A great opportunity to do something free, and to get out of the heat. Neat places for kids to sit and read or draw.

We usually visit libraries whenever in a new area. On the day we went to the Provincetown Library we were there to use the restrooms and didn't have time to check out the rest of the library. The outside of the building is lovely and inside looked inviting. Next time we are in town we will plan to spend more time exploring the library and collection.

Spent a few days working remotely in the library. Clean, pleasant, and unique library with solid number of tables and nooks to set up and spend a day working. No individual small rooms I saw so if you’ll be on the phone or video calls all day might not be ideal/ will need to keep it low/quiet. Many great window views. It’s been nice to see others remote working here. Second floor gets a little loud with visitors checking out the huge boat built into the library, but who can blame them! It’s a sight to see. Bathrooms are clean. Would recommend bringing a simple 6-9 foot extension cord to charge phone/laptop as there are not always plugs immediately next to the seating areas in reach of standard chargers. Walking distance to many places to get coffee/lunch.

One of my favorite public libraries on the Cape, the Provincetown Library, like the rest, is part of the CLAMS network, which means if they don't have what you're looking for, it's likely easy enough to get from another library location. Not to say that this branch itself doesn't have quite a bit to offer, from its central location in Provincetown & resources & services common to all libraries, to its iconic building & surprises inside. Some really striking decor.

What looks like a church along Commercial Street here in P-town is actually the town library. The first and lower levels are petite and cozy, offering reading rooms with periodicals, newspapers, and popular current reads. There are also plenty of community programs, community resources, areas devoted to local history and writers, and art-filled spaces where you can work or study. The showcase item, however, is a half-scale model of the Rose Dorothea schooner on the second floor, which is also viewable from a third-floor balcony. The actual ship was a fishing vessel built in 1905 that was docked in Provincetown and won the Lipton Cup, a sailing race sponsored by the inventor of tea bags. It's a poignant tribute and reminder to the town's fishing and maritime history.

Very interesting in that they built a replica of a Schooner in the library, that they literally had to create holes in the ceiling for on the 3rd floor to fit the Masts. Great stop on our walk through town.

There was a book sale when I visited. I bought a book by Ayn Rand since one of my colleagues recommended it to me a while ago. When checking out, the cashier mentioned there’s a Netflix documentary on her, and also commented that Rand might be among the first American anarchists. Interesting experience.

This is a nice library for the size of town. It has lots of audio books, films, regular books, etc. Every time I have walked in, I have seen lots of people using the resources of this library...either books, newspapers, periodicals, computer, etc.The Provincetown Public Library is located in the building that was once the Center Methodist Episcopal Church. This structure, like many in Provincetown, has had a long and varied history of use. When it was built in 1860 as the Center Methodist Episcopal Church it was reputed to be the largest church of Methodist denomination anywhere in the United States. It cost $22,000 to complete and could seat 900 people in its 128 pews.Through the efforts of the Provincetown Historical Association and the Historic District Study Committee, the building was nominated to the National Register of Historic Places. It received certification in October 1975. Subsequently in 1976, at a special town meeting, a group of citizens secured a vote to acquire the building for $135,000 and turn it into a local historical museum. The Provincetown Heritage Museum officially opened to the public on July 4, 1976. A dedicated group of volunteers set up exhibits on various aspects of the town's heritage. It was at this time that the half scale model of the schooner Rose Dorothea was built and installed in the building. The Heritage Museum operated on a seasonal basis with a minimal staff and a dedicated group of volunteers through the summer of 2000.In April 2005, the new Provincetown Public Library opened in the former Heritage Museum building bringing new life to this magnificent 1860 wooden structure. Inside, the Library is bright, spacious and designed to retain the feeling of the grand open spaces of the former church. On the first floor, much of the collection is contained in custom-built cases that were constructed by Provincetown master carpenter Bill Ingraham as a gift to the Town. The unique feature of these cases is that they re-use the mahogany arm rests from the church pews found in the basement before renovation.

Go here! Hidden gem (and free!) and worth going in to see the large boat replica built inside. Friendly staff, great history and selection and a great place to take a break from the hustle and bustle outside. They even have a free little library outside perfect for vacationers and locals alike.
