About Prison Book Program
The Prison Book Program is dedicated to supporting people in prison by sending free books and print resources that meet their needs and interests. Founded in 1972, it serves incarcerated individuals in 49 states, Puerto Rico, and Guam. The organization offers a meaningful volunteer experience, where volunteers assist with picking, verifying, sorting, and packaging books, as well as responding to inmates' requests. Volunteers find the work engaging, interactive, and rewarding, as they get to learn about people's personalities through their letters and help fulfill their book needs. The program is well-organized, with volunteer sessions held four times a week, and welcomes book donations during these times. Overall, Prison Book Program’s work is inspiring and impactful, combining a heartfelt mission with a rewarding volunteer environment that educates about the prison system and supports reform efforts.
