Unfortunately I have to update my review as the new managements efforts to keep up seem to fade.
Oct 1st 2024
Random insurance charge still has not been dropped. Currently also having trouble paying my rent using rentcafe.
Sept 2024
I renewed my lease back in July thinking that we experienced less power outages. It had a rocky start. First my key fob stopped working and I had to wait outside for a few hours before someone came to help. Apparently this was because these key fobs were set to expire within a year. If this is something the management is well aware of, why don’t they issue a new key fob or send me an email to have me update it? Emailed Laura the next day to express my frustration, and I did not get a response. I could have sued them for locking me out of my own property based on laws in Michigan.
Second, getting rid of random charges on rentcafe has been a struggle. if you are a current renter reading this, check and see if you’ve been charged with “insurance GL program” or “RentPlus”.
June 2024 review:
The new management has been great. Laura is very on top of her stuff and she plans fun events for the community. Mo has also been great at responding maintenance requests. Everyone is friendly and I decided to renew my lease despite their neighborhood tends to lose power a lot.

I do *not* recommend living at the George. I have lived here for five years and recently a new management took over. This new management is the greediest and most unprofessional I’ve encountered yet.
They have continued to charge me for their renters insurance despite my efforts to share with them the policy I have had for FIVE YEARS. Over the course of several weeks, they have ignored all of my emails, in-person visits and phone calls, making promises that “they will send me paperwork to opt out” but with no action or follow through. This is a huge waste of my limited free time.
You can’t trust people who are so eager to make money off you and won’t listen to you.
PS: Moe is great and the longstanding facilities team is not the problem here: they’re wonderful and friendly.

The fire alarms always randomly go off in the middle of the night so don’t expect to get sleep here. The key fobs never work so half of the time you’re locked out of the building. the elevators are broken half of the time. The whole entire duration i’ve lived here there’s construction going on at 7am so I never get any sleep. My shower head fell off when i was washing my hair and couldn’t open my eyes so that was great. Absolutely ridiculous. There’s always some issue

We lived at The George for 14 months. We agree the new management team is excellent! We found that everyone was very friendly and kind. The dogs in the building were very well behaved and we never heard barking! Our one complaint is no fault of The George—the blame is aimed at DTE. In the 14 months we were there, we lost power for 18 days. That’s tough when you are 81 and use a walker! (We were on the 5th floor and the elevators didn’t work! The new management company should really push the owners to invest in a generator.I would recommend The George to anyone looking for a nice, clean, quiet apartment with great amenities and a super staff ready to help you.Betsy Doepken

I would not have written a five-star review a few months ago -- I don't really disagree with any of the other, lower reviews that residents have posted. But The George switched over to a new management company in November, and I have been nothing but impressed with the new management. The old company required multiple follow-ups and in-person office visits to get anything resolved; the new company follows up same-day. When issues arose in my apartment that were out of their control, they worked with me to find creative solutions to fix things. When the mailroom started to overflow with packages, they hand-delivered them to apartment doors to clear things up. It's only been a couple of months, but what I've seen so far has turned The George into "somewhere I want to leave as soon as I can" to "somewhere I'm happy living for awhile." (And it's worth noting that Moe, who's led the maintenance team through both management teams, is a godsend.) I'm looking forward to seeing what else they do with the building in the coming months!

The property is excellent, but the property management team is severely lacking in experience. It's advisable to avoid dealing with Makenzie. I've encountered several instances where the resident payment portal processed my monthly auto-payment, but it didn't actually go through with the bank. I was willing to cooperate with them to understand and resolve the issue, but the property management lady, who displayed a high level of arrogance, treated me as if I had intentionally missed a payment and even issued a lawyer's notice. I've been a resident here for over two years and have never missed a payment, so they should exercise some common sense by checking the tenant payment history. Such a lovely property, but the attitude displayed by the management team is certainly not what one would expect.

If you want to live in a building where the power goes out for 3-5 days at a time every month or 2, and when the fire alarms go off in the middle of the night every month (sometimes multiple nights in a two week span leading us to waiting outside in the cold with our pets), then this is the place for you. Otherwise, avoid this place. Listen to the other reviews. The apartment may look nice, but the jarring interruptions into your life are not. Having lived in several large apartment complexes in Chicago, the number of power outages and fire alarms in this building is unprecedented. Yes, part of the power outage situation is due to DTE, but this building is not built in an area with modern/updated power grids. The prices are not worth your sanity, AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE.P.S. The theatre room, which they advertise as a unique amenity, is completely useless because management doesn’t even know the password to their own Amazon Firestick, even after asking several times to have them figure it out.

This place is a JOKE. As if it weren’t bad enough losing power for 3-4 days at a time every couple of months- the fire alarms go off constantly in the middle of the night. Four times in the last 3 months my partner and I have been woken up between the hours of 1-3 am by fire alarms and have had to evacuate with our animals. Living here has felt like a nightmare.

Stop. Don’t look here. Run!If you’re looking for a new place. This is NOT the one.The day we moved out, there were another 6 people moving out because the rents increases year on year were very high. One of the other longer term tenants told me that renting a whole house down the street was much cheaper than her studio here. It’s very noisy. You can hear your (quietist) neighbors speak, walk, even fart!Power/electric issue. Losing power “every other month” (6 times+ a year) for days is not fun! All my food spoils. Elevators do not work. I have had to check in a hotel. The George Apartments needs a backup generator! It’s not livable.Package delivery is a mess. Their system doesn’t work. Often, the delivery boxes are not used because the boxes may be too small, or because the delivery driver didn’t feel like it. It can take 30 mins to find a package in the mess.Over the years, maintenance requests have gotten better; with Moe and his crew doing a great job. The one star would be for them. Now, the management team is horrendous! Over the past few months, they’ve been trying to squeeze out every little penny from their tenants (and non-tenants) by adding JUNK fees for literally everything- from water to outside parking to using common spaces. When we moved out, the management still hasn’t refunded our deposit. They made up some fake fees and charges. Michigan law details pretty specific requirements for return of your deposit. If you don’t follow that, you’re stuck. Luckily we are familiar. But still waiting for a refund, and it’s likely we would need to drag them to court for the security deposit.Update: management refunded our deposit.

If you like chewing on plastic and licking rust, the George will make sure your apartment is set up to your tastes. Like this “completed” maintenance request delivering us the oldest, rustiest set of dishwasher racks they could find.

I laugh at this place every time I drive by. Clearly part of the 'draw' of this complex was that there were supposed to be businesses renting out the retail space up front, however those have been empty due to the asking price being way too high or some other unseen issues. Clearly those who live here are being hosed and likely paying more to offset the cost of the rotting retail space up front.

18 months ago this would have been a “1” rating. I agree with the overall statements in other reviews. Trash and mail/packages were a hot mess. For the price/mo, it was inexcusable. Further, the exterior common area grounds were completely out of control. Again, that was 18 months ago.Fast forward to today. The property management company made a few changes to the apartment management team. There were changes to the trash and mail processes. A lot was just muscling through the problems manually. Moe is a godsend. The common areas have been cleaned up. 4 starsWhy not 5 stars? The cost of rent. It’s been trending up year to year. I’ve been here >2yrs with rent increasing each year. My small, 2 bedroom (900sqft) apartment is significantly higher than the “market rate” (corporate executives from the management company were frankly disrespectful when I asked for an explanation). That means new leases are signing at 400$ a month less than I’m currently paying and those apartments are larger and have better overall appointments. It’s frustrating and remains a problem. I recently received an “early bird bonus” letter to renew my lease. Sign up 6 months early for a 25$/mo discount. Really? I understand that costs increase and that they can’t afford vacancies, but even though improved, shared services remain hit or miss. The corporate executives drive the local management team too thin to reduce cost. Way too thin. Finally, for the money, these apartments are ridiculously loud. I hear every flush, every drunken arrival at 0200, as well as…….. you know. 0 stars.I plan to ride out my current lease and then move on. I don’t know what the A2 market looks like, but I’m curious as to how they justify loosing a 3yr tenant, painting etc to prepare the apartment for a new lease, market the vacancy etc and still make the same or more money. They’ll loose money on it. I’m not particularly excited about a move, but I can quickly find comparable apartments that are 500$/mo cheaper. This one bothers me.I don’t want to miss the point that the local team works their butt off. They deserve some recognition. But overall, I see the situation as a 3 (actually a 2.5, but rounded up).As always, YMMV.

Racist office staff. The property manager Makenzie Blazek should be fired as her blatant racial discrimination made my VERY short time here horrible. Would not recommend. Fire her.
