“A few generations of our family have been going to Frentz & Son's Hardware since the 1940's. The same family's owned & cared for it since 1931.Not once have I head anyone say they did not get exceptional service at Frentz. All one has to do is start walking toward the counter in the center of the store and you will either be greeted on the way to the counter or at the counter.Even on crazy-busy days, people are willing to help. (They multi-task well!) Each person is very knowledgeable about all items and will be happy to suggest a better product or method. It's real advice, too- not some made up stuff like at many hardware stores.Pricing here is comparable to , or lower than, other local hardware stores. Actually, their prices are often lower than the big box nightmare stores.Frentz is an ideal place to shop for fasteners. The selection is great and, for most items, you don't have to buy a giant box to get what you need. They sell by-the-piece. Only American Integrated has more fasteners than Frentz, but that's all the sell.Want something odd? Chances are Frentz has it, or will get it. If you don't see it, ask. While shopping there once, I casually mentioned that I had to stop at Bearing Service for an unusual sized V-Belt. The Frentz guy asked what size, and 2 minutes later, I had a V-Belt. Another time, I needed a spud wrench for a steam trap. Frentz had it. (Bet they sell one per decade, but they had it.)Their electrical department selection is quite good. The choice of various switch and receptacle plates is a giant wall of treasures. The plumbing aisle is super stocked with a large variety.Frents & Son's has you covered, no matter what you need.PS: It's a fun place to explore. Next time you're there, look at the floor in the fastener aisle. There are a zillion washers stuck in the floor from the decades. Designer Chic!”

I recently learned from one of my customers that my political views and those had by home depot may not align. I am so confused? Is it ok to still get my materials from here? And what about those wiener stands?, is they're meat even kosher or vegan or bpa free and should I care? also i'm not sure why the relish glows in the dark but golly is it good!!Drywall cost has remained markedly stable and 2x4's are still slightly smaller than advertised!”

“As far as medium sized hardware stores go, Ace as a whole brand name is hard to beat. This location specifically is especially nice. Store is kept up ery well, sales associated always seem willing to help, and are also knowledgeable! I point that out because at some of the big box hardware stored (think the color orange , the color blue, the color green), so many times I've either asked for help or seen someone else ask for help only for the teenager working that particular department to flat out say that they have no clue about anything in the department. Also, this isn't a slight against teenagers or people who are still learning a given thing. In fact, I appreciate the honesty. Much rather that than someone feeding you false info for the of not admitting they're clueless. I say it simply to say that having the person you ask for help not only understand you and know what you're talking about, but be able to add their own knowledge to the situation makes a person feel good.Great store, awesome location, staff that other Ace stores ought to be jealous of.”

They even have gone out of their way to make sure I had coupons for specific things I was buying. It’s always very quiet, organized and friendly in there and has everything I need to do my house projects. Love it!”

“Mom and Pop hardware with character to spare. Any business with a pet cat is hard not to give five stars on that basis alone. His name is Miggy (named after Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera) he's a former stray and he's a bit of a bruiser having been in some scrapes. Miggy was perfectly content to let me pet him though and the guy behind the counter was all too happy to fill me in with all the details about him. The first time I walked in here I bought a gallon of Killz, the primer paint with the comically bad ass name. The second time I bought one of those litter grabber arms, I think the branding on it was Nifty Nabber. I found that right away, almost as soon as I walked in the front door. I bought other stuff too both times but it's escaping me what it was right now. Possibly rock salt the first time. The bicycle selection here is pretty mighty. It might put Third Ave Hardware to shame. Some super dope vintage bikes here. They also have odd stuff like DVDs to fill out shelf space. It's a bit rough around the edges here and there. A bucket in an aisle to catch rainwater from the leaky roof and a buzzer to get in. I didn't need to use it either time but for Highland Park it does seem like a reasonable option. There was also a couple birds flying around inside on my second trip. I was pretty sure they had just flown in, but knowing about Miggy I had to half jokingly ask if they were pets. The guy at the register said they just fly in when people open the front door. Maybe they're who the buzzer is really for. There's some great vintage signs behind the register and a hand drawn rat on cardboard by the pest control items. Just lots of interesting odds and ends. Lowes it ain't but Louis Ace Hardware has realness by the bucket. The rain bucket maybe but I'll take it. Places like this are a dying breed. Autofill is starting to catch on to that phrase but these are the kind of places I especially like writing reviews for.”

“This is a great family owned local neighborhood hardware store. I went to two major chain hardware stores (Ace Hardware and Home Depot) first in an attempt to get a specific key copied but neither one carried the key template to make the key.Ironically, the Home Depot store employee recommended that I try Miller's Pro Hardware right down the street and I'm glad I did. Miller's Pro Hardware was able to make copies of my key for me (in less than 5 minutes) and provided phenomenal customer service in the process. From now on, I'm going to Miller's first.”

“Have a very old Sears craftsman opener which needed the keypad replaced. Received the keypad and tried to program without success. Contacted Door Openers late on a Friday afternoon and received an immediate response from Marc. He went right into troubleshooting, asking what units were working and asked for the model numbers of the pieces I had. On Sunday evening I get an email from Marc saying that I had an additional unit plugged in to the wall outlet connecting to the motor unit. I never knew it was there. Simple instructions from Marc followed and within minutes of programing, I had a functional key pad.Happy I found these guys online. Fast shipping, great pricing and the best in customer service.”

“I've been going to Durst for about 40 years. It used to be my Store Of Last Resort because the people were consistently unfriendly and not at all helpful. (Except for the lumber desk, who mostly were A-OK)Things have changed recently. Over the last several months, I've been there repeatedly. The employees are mostly friendlier and most are helpful. On the floor, the person named Al is outstandingly helpful and always cheerful. At the lumber desk, they are helpful, as they always have been. I like dealing with Ron because he's fun to joke around with and always helps me save money. The cashiers are friendly, fast and accurate.Hardware cost wise, Durst is usually a bit higher that other hardware stores, but lower than any Great Lakes Ace. And, some items are cheaper at Durst. Plus, at Durst one can get in & get out quickly.Lumber costs more at Durst than at a big box store, but Durst has good wood. (Well, as good as wood gets these days..) The big box stores keep the wood inside, where the air is conditioned (heated, cooled, dry, humid). That's bad for wood. Durst stores it outside, under cover and properly stacked. Therefore, the project has less waste. In the long run, it's usually cheaper to shop for lumber at Durst despite the higher cost per board foot. Plus, at Durst you don't have to dig through junk wood, nor do you have to load it. They even will cut to spec if desired.As long as the new and improved attitudes stay, I'll continue to go to Durst.”
