Platte River State Fish Hatchery offers an educational experience with a self-guided tour that showcases various fish in tanks and a view of the weir for spawning fish. Visitors can learn about the history of salmon in the Great Lakes, including the introduction of salmon to control Alewife. While the self-guided format is mostly well-received, some guests wish for guided tours for a more interactive experience. The facilities are well-maintained and feature a nice visitor center. Although August may not showcase much activity, the hatchery remains a must-see destination for anyone interested in the state's fishery. Upgrades in recent years enhance the overall experience, making it a required stop for nature enthusiasts.
This was extremely educational. I'm so glad we took the time to walk the entire tour. It's so important for our state fishery. I think this is a must see if you have time. Young or old, it really explains a lot about where our Coho Sslmon come from. To see the process up close was very interesting!
