Cuba Currency Con at Comerica Bank: With the partial lifting of the embargo to Cuba and direct flights from the US, my family went to Cuba for the Thanksgiving holiday. While Cuba was beautiful and spared from many of the American chain hotels, stores, and restaurants, it also lacks ATMs and the ability to use US credit cards. We were required to use Cuban convertible pesos. US dollars are charged an extra 10% conversion fee compared to other currencies, so we decided to take euros. We went to our local Comerica Bank, where we have been bank customers for over twenty years, and asked them to withdraw $5000 and convert this amount to euros to cover our group of 5 for the week for hotels, restaurants, transportation etc. When we went to the bank they were ready to hand us 500 euro notes! We told them that we expected such notes to be useless in Cuba, and have since learned during our trip that this would most likely have been the case. Comerica Bank said that they could only give foreign currency in denominations that are available at the time of request. This bank procedure was not explained at the time of request. After redepositing the currency into our account we lost $379. We have argued in numerous phone calls that the bank should not charge this fee. They insist that we are out of that money even though we never took possession of the euros.

There are lots of banks in the area, but few have as good of an employee as this branch does. Deana is personable, friendly, and efficient. It's nice to come to a bank that not only takes care of what it is you need (surprisingly for this affluent neighborhood, most banks do not), but to do so graciously is a delight. The other tellers are certainly nice enough, but Deana stands out amongst the crowd. If you belong to a Comerica Bank, I would drive the extra few miles to frequent this particular one, and visit someone that'll make your day a little more bright.
