This medium sized grocery store keeps us well-stocked. They carry the Spartan store brand (now called Our Family). I find their prices reasonable and the staff courteous and knowledgeable. We eat a lot of fresh produce and there is a good variety of fresh produce. I also like the International section where they cater to the University community with Middle Eastern, Thai, Hispanic and Kosher ingredients to name a few. I recently wanted to make a Middle Eastern dinner and thought I might have to go the Eastern Market or Dearborn but was pleasantly surprised to find several types of lentils, spices, tabouli and falafel items.I don't like to go from store to store and really like that they are one of the few places that carry the daily Detroit News, Detroit Free Press and New York Times. It is my go to place for the free papers -The Downtown Monitor, Metro Times and Between the Lines.Recently I have gone to the pharmacist. He is so kind and takes his time explaining everything. So different from the corporate experience at some of the chain stores. They do a really good job of serving the needs of the University Community and the surrounding neighborhood. I get the impression that they really care. Since the owners are local the money stays in the metro area - another plus. But I shop there because the quality is good and the prices are reasonable. Why anyone would want to go to Whole Foods and be ripped off royally for the some of the same products is beyond me. They do have lots of organic at University Foods too. And you can do your banking. We are lucky to have them.I have also found baking pans, and other kitchen essentials. I've bought indoor plants that have thrived and are less costly than other places.

Total crap. It used to be the only grocery store prior to Whole Foods. I can't count the times I've had bad experiences there in the 2000's

This is my go-to place for groceries close to the university. It has a deli with freshly made food and a pharmacy. Good selection at reasonable price.

Middle of the road grocery with some five star attributes - Absolutely nothing wrong with this place, but due to location, some annoying attributes like anti-theft carts with wheels that lock - even when you're still in the store, and an overwhelming amount of snack / junk food which makes it hard to find healthier options. - Sunday New York Times! - They often have produce items that I don't find at some other groceries and with better prices. Today I found ginger that I couldn't find at a couple of other locations and blood oranges. - Good selection of certain local items like Nikki's Ginger Tea (multiple sizes and varieties!) and Better-Made chips and snacks - Solid selection of non-alcoholic beer - I love to see a place with at least three varieties. Today I saw my favorite Heineken 0.0, Budweiser Zero (black label), and O'Doul's. - Often some interesting international candies or treats near the counters, but not consistent. Staff here is solid, friendly, and speedy.

Very good store, from the produce and the meats. And each section of the store. Very clean also, that's my go to place.

University Food Center is basically your typical neighborhood grocery store. It has all the basics and a some specialty items. However, just inside the door is their deli counter. It is stocked with cold and hot prepared foods. There are a multitude of salads and sandwiches. The hot area has slices(regular and stuffed), fried chicken, ribs tips, fish, spaghetti, mac & cheese and more. They also serve made to order dishes, including whole pizza. While I have only tried a few items in the hot food area, the star of the menu for me is their chicken shawarma. They offer a 6 inch for $3 and a 12 inch (yes 12 inch) for $6. The ingredients are well-proportioned, fresh and hot. I dropped one off to my daughter and she called me saying it was literally perfect . This from a girl who has had 3 shawarmas, from different places in the last 3 days. The service is pleasant and attentive. The hours are a little restrictive. They open daily at 10 a.m. and close at 8 p.m. every day except Sunday when they close at 6.

This place is close, fast, safe, and well-stocked with all the basics (plus a few extras), and best of all, saves me from having to drive to the suburbs.

I came here needing a quick lunch before I headed home. They have a hot section/ deli area. I've only tried their pizza and shawarma. Both are delicious. This time I went for a shawarma, and I wasn't disappointed. The shawarma cost 3.00 and some change. The rest is just a traditional grocery store, so if you need a few groceries, they have them!

University Foods had re-vamped their deli to offer more selections. And their pizza, wings, & ribs are always great! They are almost as comprehensive as Whole Foods, and a lot cheaper. The people working there are all friendly & helpful. What a great service for WSU area, Woodbridge, and other area neighborhoods!

One of the BEST delis around! I go there often for lunch as it is a better, less expensive alternative to many of the eateries around WSU campus.

Respectable selection of food, produce. Meat is dubious but I'm picky. You can get decent produce for reasonable prices (a dollar for a pound of kale, which I need to meet my hipster quotas, compares at $2-3/lb at Whole Foods). You can also get everything ranging from prepared-fresh-in-store food to that fancy Bob's Red Mill grain stuff. Where University falls short is prices on some basic items, and it's unclear what exactly has determined their pricing scheme-- butter for five and ten dollars a pound (!), or 5 lbs of sugar for 5 bucks. But it'll do in a pinch- and while the selection is inferior to Meijer, that's mostly by virtue of the comparatively smaller size of the store. I'll definitely buy stuff here again, but would only prefer it to Meijer because it's not a 20 minute drive, and I am also typically better served by my local grocery store (within a 5 minute walk).

This is a full service independent grocery store that has a wide variety of options, including vegetarian alternatives and ethnic foods. That said, they have a habit of leaving the price tags off of their most expensive foods, which is super annoying. Also, their hours are a joke! I can't believe they close at 6pm on Sundays and 8pm on week nights. It's like they're happy to lose business to Whole Foods which is open until 10pm every night, and about a mile away. I honestly think if University Foods was open later they would make more money and it would make the neighborhood safer. Here's hoping they catch on.

Small grocery store, yet it had the essential items we needed. It isn't the nicest, but its not too far from the college. If you're from down south, it's almost equivalent to a Piggly Wiggly (lol) or a Winn-Dixie. While being there I didn't recall seeing a deli station where you can order your own sliced meats or cheeses. But the prices for what we needed were reasonable.

Every time I've come here to return bottles their machines are full. EVERY TIME. Then I'm treated like an inconvenience when I ask to clear the bins. The food is a bit over priced. Lots of items are not marked with prices. Never a pleasant experience here.

University Market has some of the most helpful staff. I asked the stock guy to order more low sodium olives & he did it right on the spot. I find their fresh food selection, it's quality, & prices to be comparable & sometimes better than Whole Foods (Woodward/MLK Jr/Mack). The store maintains it's cleanliness & checkout is a breeze. Lots of student traffic, in comparison to other grocery stores nearby; there is a SaV-A-Lot on Grand River/Warren but it is dirty & one must use caution. The area is a food desert for sure, which makes University Market is 200% better, semi-safer (always use caution, transients are everywhere) & conveniently located, well-stocked to quickly get the items I need to add to my lunch pail during the work day without having to go to all the way to Meijer on 8 Mile/Woodward or out to in Allen Park or Kroger in Dearborn/or up I-75 towards Madison Heights.
