Pewabic Pottery is Detroit's National Historic Landmark Pottery, founded in 1903. This active maker space, store, education studio, and museum is a must-see destination. It is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to enriching the human spirit through clay. The place is amazing and a very cool space. The front room sells items made on the premises, while the back room has items from around the world. Upstairs is a free museum detailing the history and artistry behind Pewabic, which has created beauty nationwide. The staff are super helpful, welcoming, and lovely, offering history and answering questions. They have a design room with samples and ideas for custom tiles. It is an epic venue for events, with great food and excellent service. Many enjoy taking their tile glazing classes, which are a lot of fun and special to do in such a historic building. Purchased items come out stunning. Pewabic is distinctly identified with the city of Detroit; its distinctive iridescent glaze, especially a representative shade of green, is iconic. It is an investment in the spirit of industry and a piece of history for your home. Support is highly recommended.
I ordered the pheasant tile with glacier finish, and am very pleased. The packing material was secure, the delivery was on time, and the tile was heavier and more substantial (in a favorable way), than I had expected. It's just what I wanted.

My boyfriend took me to Pewabic Pottery for a tile glazing class and we had so much fun together. I appreciated Michelle and her laid-back personality, along with her willingness to demonstrate all the quality techniques that go into quality tile glazing :)

Don't forget to check out the museum upstairs before you go into the shop. It'll help you understand why the pieces are so expensive but worth every penny. There's plenty of parking, bathrooms, and they offer pottery classes too.
