My diagnosis was a shot engine. O' Brien rebuilt the engine however my car continued to leak oil and run hot. I returned the car for additional service they diagnosed my Jeep had another issue that cost me $826.00. As of today I have a low oil pressure alert which I never had prior and when I accelerate I hear a weird rattling. I've spent over 2k on rentals and over 5k in service cost dealing with O'Brien. I WARN DO NOT TAKE YOUR CAR THEIR YOU WILL OVER PAY AND WAIT LONG PERIODS OF TIME FOR COMMUNICATION.

Price gouge everything. I got quoted $550 for a headlight and a windshield wiper linkage repair. A lightbulb maybe cost about $10-$20 and I found the wiper linkage for about $120 that doesn’t add up. I get that there’s labor but in no way should I be paying an extra $400 for labor on a lightbulb and windshield wipers. Just disappointed I’ve came multiple times. I’ve been quoted atrocious amount and then get it fixed for way cheaper somewhere else. I just like to support local businesses through my father that knows this business. But we’ll never be coming here to get anything fixed on my car.

Bewildered by the Communication Breakdown
I’m not in the habit of writing negative reviews. If you browse my profile, you’ll find countless positive ones for businesses across Detroit and its neighboring areas. But I feel compelled to share my experience here because I’m left completely confused by my recent transaction.
I brought my 2016 Transit Connect in due to occasional issues with gear shifting while accelerating—especially on hills. The engine would rev, but the van wouldn’t gain speed. Initially, the business offered a free diagnostic, which turned up nothing. So I scheduled a follow-up and dropped off the vehicle overnight.
Two days later, they contacted me with a laundry list of issues that didn’t align at all with my original complaint. They claimed the brakes were locking up, the parking brake felt engaged while moving, the wheel couldn’t rotate, and that it was difficult to even get the van on their lift. They said they bled the brake line to release it and advised me to call my insurance company because repairs would run into the thousands.
None of these issues had ever occurred prior to drop-off. Alarmed by the sudden and severe diagnosis, I asked them not to perform any work until I could see the vehicle myself. They insisted it was unsafe to drive and that I'd need to pay $100 just to pick it up. When I arrived, that fee mysteriously increased by $25. Frustrated, I paid and took my keys.
Here’s the kicker: once I got in and drove off, NONE of the issues they described were present. I made it from Ferndale back to Detroit with functioning brakes, freely turning wheels, and no signs of the chaos they painted over the phone. It felt like either a massive miscommunication or something far more concerning.
After driving with intermittent transmission issues for years, this experience left me deeply disappointed—not just because no repairs were completed after a two-day wait, but because the proposed repairs didn’t match reality. Spending money over misleading claims is enough for me to never return. I’ll absolutely be sharing this story with others.

I recently had an amazing experience at O’Brien’s service! Wendy from their admin staff was friendly, prompt, and on top of any follow up that we discussed throughout the repair process. Frank, the owner, went above and beyond to help me with my vehicle, he was clear on what was needed for the issue I came in for and what to expect going forward, excellent communicator and very kind. Pricing is very reasonable and the shop environment was welcoming, everyone seems happy to be there for both clients/staff. I’m relieved to have found a great place for my auto needs.

This is the first shop I’ve had to take my car to since I moved down here, as one knows that can be a very anxious situation for some people who aren’t as well versed in dealing with car issues. I was so overjoyed with how welcoming and kind the staff is here, I immediately knew it was in the right hands. They fixed my car for me so fast and even drove it to me at work when it was finished! I am so glad we took it here. Honest work, fair prices and fast turnaround. Highly recommend :-)

This establishment lacks transparency and professionalism. Staff communication is poor, and customer service is subpar. They fail to disclose diagnostic fees upfront, only revealing them at pickup if you decline repairs. Prices are outrageously high—nearly double standard labor costs. Always confirm all charges beforehand to avoid unexpected and excessive fees. Proceed with caution.

Can't speak highly enough of O'Brien and their auto service. Great customer service, friendly environment and the work they did for the price they charged was unbeatable. I will recommend them to others needing trustworthy and reliable automotive work.

Fantastic. I don't have anything else that I could possibly add. I had business with this garage (obtaining a vehicle - not service) that spanned a few days; and then finally meeting everyone plus Mr. O'Brien the owner - and one heck of a great neighborhood repair shop. Funny, lively, good front desk staff. A little small of a waiting room (not even that) but take a few to look around; auto shop collectibles, oil cans, and the like, dating back to who knows when. Master mechanics. 4x4 specialists the sign says, and even collectible cars out front being worked on the day I was there at least.
