This weekend I had purchased a cake for a special event for my wife and granddaughter. Went to VG's Howell Mi. and explained to Brooks in the bakery department about what I would like. She did an amazing job with the decorations and flavor of the cake. No where in Michigan will you find a better tasting & decorated cake but before ordering please be sure to request it from Brooks. She is in our opinion the BEST in the cake business! J G

I am new to the area and several saying how nice VG's is. So I decided to go there. I went and they had a sale on Brussel sprouts, asparagus and 5lb bags of potatoes which I wanted. I got to the checkout and when I questioned the price of Brussel sprouts and potatoes, I was told they weren't the ones on sale. The sign was above the items and there were NO other brussel sprouts in sight. Same with potatoes, said it wasn't that brand but yet the potatoes were there under the buy one get one free. I was upset and didn't go back for several weeks. Well I saw I their ad this week that pot pies from deli were on sale. A few people had told me how good they were so I decided to go there and check it out. I went to the deli, no one in sight, someone was waiting for a minute as I looked for the pot pies, finally someone came out, and helped him Afterwards I asked where the pot pies were. She said they were out. Not happy about that but then I went to the produce. There was a sign that said .89c by the red, yellow and orange peppers. So I picked up 2 of them. Went to the checkout and they rang up $1.59. Cashier called produce and they said that was for the green peppers. Really again NO green peppers were there cause I would of gotten 2 of those also. Again a sign was above a different product that wasn't on sale. I am done with the store. I actually drove past 2 other stores to go there. Not again.

I've been shopping at this store for 29 years. It had been my go to place for local, nearby, quality products. Unfortunately, things have been on an accelerating downward slide after the store became part of the Spartan chain. The store no longer offers fresh fish and the butcher is gone. I can't remember the last time they stocked fresh chicken wings. Really? Chicken wings? Sems like every time I stop there something else is not stocked. Recently it would seem they were busted for selling alcohol to a minor because every time I buy alcohol they insist on seeing my drivers license. It doesn't matter that I stop there three or four times a week and as I said earlier have been shopping there for nearly thirty years. Do they think that somehow I have found the secret of becoming younger? The final straw was today when I attempted to buy alcohol but was refused because my license had expired. My license was fine the previous visit but not today. The parking lot has fewer cars every day and it's clear they are struggling to survive. It is also clear their problems are, in large part, self inflicted. The fact that they are close no longer overcomes the pile of negatives they offer the public. Did I mention the parking lot? Henceforth there will be one less car in the lot, mine. Kroger is just around the corner. Oh-about the ID checks - did I mention I'm seventy years old?

I can only shop here when their ad is decent. The prices are considerably more. The produce is not fresh, but the shelves were full which I was surprised. The only friendly staff there is a woman who always works the service counter, Eva I believe her name was. The other staff does not say a word to me anytime I'm in there.

The folks at VG's have been a Godsend during the Covid mess. They've always been punctual when we've picked up an order and have even called us about substituting items that were not in stock.

Extremely helpful and proactive service. Convenient hours and location. Staff went out of their way to solve my problem and suggest alternatives which they then followed up on immediately. Sunday hours are helpful for those of us with irregular hours. Great bank and great location!

Stopped by to get a few items for meals the next couple of days and it was on the way home; since I prefer to hit the store while I am already out and about. I like the sign that indicates the carts have been sanitized. I especially liked the aisle guides chart on the actual carts. It showed where most of the items you might be looking for would be located in the store, that's a great idea, all stores should have such a guide on the cart to minimize down time wasted trying to figure out what aisle to find what you want, only to find after reading the generic genre of food items on the aisle signs in the hopes your item is down that chosen aisle. It rarely ever is down the aisle I hope or think it ought to be. It was nice and quiet, it's after 9 PM on a week day. I should try to make it a point to always shop at night, all of the time like tonight, it's so quiet, peaceful and almost tranquil. I was able to find all of the produce and non-perishable items too. There were 3 self-checkout registers and one manned register open. Went to the manned register. David greeted me warmly, asked how my weekend was, I replied over. He said he worked the weekend and has a few days off during the week. He wished me a good week and I wished him a good weekday weekend. It was a quick in and out trip in less than 15, not bad.

Overall, I like the store but the meat, bakery, and deli departments need significant work. The seafood beneath the glass in the seafood/meat section is terrible. Not only is the selection awful, but if you could actually see salmonella, it would be their shrimp and fish. The bakery and deli employees are rude and never to be found. I've waited 15 mins for a deli employee to show up and finely rang a bell in the bakery to get their attention. I was then lectured by the employee about how that bell was for the bakery only. I said ok so does that mean we are welcome to just walk back into the employee area to get assistance? No response, of course. Also, if you call ahead and request that your fried chicken be made fresh so it's ready when you arrive at a specified time, be ready for it to be NOT made fresh. Really should have opened the package prior to leaving the store.

Very friendly employees. Would give 5 stars if the deli was easier. There's usually not an employee present and you may have to stand there 10 minutes until they show up.
