I’ve been a loyal Goodwill shopper for years and have always appreciated the treasure hunt aspect of browsing through the store. However, I’m really disappointed with the new organizational system where all items—beyond clothing—are now sorted strictly by color rather than by category.
While color-coding can be visually appealing, it’s not practical when it comes to non-clothing items. For example, if I come in looking for a kitchen item like a spatula or a small appliance, I now have to check every color section (red, blue, green, etc.) rather than going to a “kitchenware” section. The same goes for things like books, electronics, holiday decor, or office supplies—items that have nothing in common except the color they happen to be.
This change has made shopping far more time-consuming and frustrating. Instead of being able to quickly find what I need, I now have to comb through dozens of unrelated items just because they share the same color. It feels disorganized and chaotic, and it ruins the experience for customers who are coming in with a purpose—especially those on a budget who don’t have time to browse every shelf in the store.
I understand that organizing clothes by color works well and looks nice, but applying the same method to all merchandise is just not functional. I hope the store reconsiders and brings back the previous layout, where items were grouped by type. It was far more intuitive and helpful for shoppers.

I cannot believe the store is cutting size tags and brown tags out of clothing. Shaking my head when they are a four profit company business and also have eBay stores that they sell items for outrageous amounts.

I had never been to a Goodwill store before, but a friend kept raving about all the great deals she was finding—so I finally caved and checked out the Goodwill in Imlay City… and WOW, I’m so glad I did!
I live in an older home built in 1900 with no air conditioning (yikes 🥵), and she mentioned they had a stand-alone AC unit there for just $25. That alone convinced me to make the trip—and let me tell you, Goodwill did not disappoint!
The moment I walked in, the vibe was light and cheerful. The staff were beyond friendly, smiling and even singing while working, which honestly just made the whole experience that much better. It felt welcoming and fun—like a treasure hunt with a really good playlist in the background.
They really do have awesome deals, and I’ve been back several times since. In fact, we’ve turned it into a weekly visit! Whether you’re hunting for something specific or just browsing for fun, this place is a gem. Thank you, Goodwill Imlay City—you’ve got a new fan! 💛🛍️🎶

I always shop at goodwill stores and usually can’t find everything I am looking for. Luckily this location provided everything I was looking for. Super nice people working there and very helpful when you need it. Thank you for a great shopping experience. I will be returning soon!

Cleanest, friendly staff. Organized items, large selection. Best Goodwill in Michigan! Appreciated cashier Newt, friendly and cheerful! Don't see a lot of happy.workers these days, was refreshing!
