Henderson castle is a fun Bed and Breakfast. However, before you go here you need to understand that it's an old house that has been converted. It's not a posh 5 star hotel located in a major city. It's a historical building in Kalamazoo, MI. We were in town for another event and instead of staying at the hotel my girlfriend thought we should stay someplace fun, and she loves old Victorian's. She found Henderson Castle and then the only choice was which room. She used the website to choose which room, and ended up choosing the King's Tower. It was a fun, if not a little cramped, room. Honestly, the best part of Henderson castle is the architecture. It's absolutely gorgeous. Yes, the rooms and building needs some repair and maybe a little better upkeep, but if you're looking for a stay in a historic room, this can't be beat. Overall we enjoyed our stay at Henderson Castle. Things to keep in mind when booking rooms. If you get a room on the third floor, you run the risk of them having a private party in the third-floor hall, and you'll have to walk through it to get to your room. This happened to us, but it really wasn't an issue. Also, they do enforce a quiet time at 10pm. The staff disappears around 10pm as well. You are on your own. It does need some upkeep, but do you want modern or historic? Also, allegedly the castle is haunted. We didn't see anything, but if you're into the paranormal, this is a place you want to check out.

Celebrated my parents 50th anniversary at the castle and it was beautiful! Andrea helped me every step of the way with all the planning. Highly recommend!

My husband and I bought an offer for a discounted price at Henderson Castle in Kzoo from Bookings. We booked to come stay the day after new years day and spend one night and have a dinner reservation. We got a call from Henderson Castle after the booking of our room / dinner was confirmed and was asked by the establishment if we could be ok with not having dinner reservations because they wanted to give the kitchen staff off the day after New years. I thought it odd that this wouldn't have been thought of ahead of time and the ability to make a reservation for dinner that day would have been possible but I also worked in the Industry for years and understand giving your staff a nice break is considerate- so I said "Sure" we can just change that date...as I wanted to have dinner with my stay. We were then told that there were groupons foe sale for a lovely spa package to add on. I already wanted to add on the Romance package so I also bought the Groupon and booked a new date. I thought all was well- then got a call again telling me that the new date I chose would not work for the spa package because the massage therapist would be on vacation. Then I booked another date so I could receive all parts to my reservation. I did not have emailed updates of changes and when I called a couple of times to work out these issues I had a person on the phone that did not understand the issues (caused by the establishment) of the reservation amd tried to tell me what I did and how I messed up the reservations. There were a few times I just wanted to asked for a refund - however, I was excited and hoping to have this be a wonderful experience, one we would want to enjoy again and give recommendations for. Overall staff was very nice, accommodating, and professional. We LOVED our tour and tour guide- very genuine person. Megan was great and was the only person that seemed to keep all the (establishment caused issues) with our reservation straight. High tea was only ok- we were the only people in the place and the dinning room was a mess- tables not set up or clean, our napkins at our table had bread crumbs/food all over them- we had to exchange our napkins with another tables napkins that were cleaner. The glassware throughout the entire establishment was gross and had lip marks on the rims- I'm sure the glasses were put through a washer but you have to polish that stuff and make sure lip marks are not on glassware- this includes the glassware in the rooms and coffee mugs (it was all gross). The only time this was not an issue was at the dinner service- the glasses were polished then. Our spa package included couples massage, private hot tub usage, and chocolate covered strawberries and glass of bubbly. Our massages were great and our massage therapists were nice but the male was abrupt and pushy and pushed for is to tip via his venmo and not on the credit card slip because he gets taxed on the credit card slip- I get it as a worker in the industry but I would NEVER say that to a customer. We never got our paid for private use of the hot tub because it wasn't turned on in time- it was cold. So they turned on the sauna last minute to try to make up for the hot tub. Our room was ok- the bathroom was hilarious because it only had a jet tub bath- no shower....it looked so dirty- I would have never taken a bath in that thing. Thank goodness we only stayed one night- so I could shower at home the next day. There was no garbage can in our room. Dinner was a big disappointment. Drinks were great but food was ok to awful. My husband's filet was not bad, potatoes were good and overall meal was nice. Mine was horrible- first the menu said King Crab...they tried to pass off snowcrab as king crab and would have charged me that price had I not said anything. The crab was cold- not even warm, and the rice was hard and seemed like it was microwaved. My vegetables were hot in some place amd cold in others which also seemed like microwaved. I couldn't eat my meal and I asked for it to be taken off the bill- which it was-

Friendly staff with a fun atmosphere. We stayed in the Dutch room and about what you expect from a house that is 150 years old. Location is a bit away from downtown bars and restaurants.

I surprised my mom with an overnight stay in the "Victorian" room, an hour massage, a gourmet dinner, a formal breakfast after the free Continental Breakfast. We both count staying there as a great memory maker. Sure, the prices of the Clarion or Best Western or Motel 6 are a bit less to a lot less, but what person (10-25+ years later) who is in their right mind would say: "Oh hey! Remember when we were in Kalamazoo, Michigan and we stayed in the Clarion! Dang was that AMAZING! Wow! I tell ya grandson - it was great!"? Name me a person who would rather say that than that they have THE MEMORY of staying in a REAL CASTLE! Yeah... There IS a GREAT difference there. And to those complaining about any upgrading or construction being done when they stayed there... Do you ever work on YOUR home or apartment? What does YOUR home look like, a castle? I highly doubt it. Does your home boast something parallel or better than the Henderson Castles antique furniture, wall hangings, intricately painted ceilings, distinctively unique bar room, THREE HUGE dining rooms, a GENUINE antique suit of armor, a HUGE 127 year old mercury backed mirror, gorgeous carved woodworking ALL OVER THE PLACE, more than one antique rugs that are worth more than what some people make PER YEAR, a basement with a huge gourmet kitchen, a $75,000 wine cellar with your OWN brand of wine, aesthetics that blow people's minds, etc? I highly doubt that your "castle" is actually and truly a "castle" like the one being reviewed by me right now. Heck, I VERY HIGHLY DOUBT that your home is on here for review. Yet... Some people on here naively write reviews as if they VALIDLY own or know of anything better for the price to even COMPARE the Henderson Castle and their prices too. Let alone the fact that their complaints about the Staff there have no contemporary validity, they were FULLY staffed with GREAT people when we stayed there on 3-21-2024. I'm highly offended at some of the people's unfounded reviews on here. They sound like they are comparing Henderson Castle to some other building built today when those two have ABSOLUTELY nothing in common with this castle. The beds aren't the same (GORGEOUS wooden and leather Victorian beds with golden accents) with new mattresses kick azz when compared to some boring, rinky-dink hotel bed frame made of angle steel and PLASTIC wheels to move it with), French Chef Gourmet Food tastes BETTER than Happy Joe's pizza or Kan-Tucky chicken does, the staff ACTUALLY CARE about you and their duties, the OWNER ACTUALLY cares about you and your stay, the owner PERSONALLY shares HIS GORGEOUS CASTLE with you - as compared to some "rich man north of Richmond" who could barely give a rats you know what about you and only wants your money... Heck, I could go on, but if someone doesn't get it by now...maybe it had better be drawn out and explained to them in crayon. If you want this or that - visit them ahead of time (as I did) just to make sure that you will be getting what YOU DESIRE for your money. If you don't like it when you see your room, ask for another or maybe you might rather go stay at the nearest boring hotel that Google Maps or your GPS says is the closest to you. Then let's see if your memories will be cherished and that you'll ACTUALLY find enough elsewhere to REMEMBER. Our great memories remain and I'm sure that it will remain for years to come. No, not all of the rooms are right for everyone - but there ARE CHOICES of rooms for everyone. I am giving this 5 Stars because there's ABSOLUTELY NOTHING ELSE to compare it to within hundreds of miles I'm sure. But maybe you prefer the greatly vast history (cough!) of the nearest bed that's the closest to Henderson Castle. I wanted to SPOIL my mom on the first anniversary of my dad's death just so that perhaps she would forget at least HALF of her grief for a day and night -- but instead...we CELEBRATED my dad and didn't grieve him with nearly as many sad thought

Got the French room with the VIP romance package cost me $629 total before I step foot onto property. The staff was awesome. Talking about Megan the bartender and Matt. A special thanks to Matt for making my wife her own special drink which she enjoyed. The VIP package included the couple massage. I'll describe it as not the worst but also not the best massage but the wife wanted to take a nap afterwards so job well done. The room definitely showed it's age. The toilet ran all night. I was able to get it to stop once but after that I didn't stop. It is an old room with character but the price was pretty good for it. Since I got the VIP package it had rose pedals on the ground and 3 roses on the bed with champagne and two cups. I came her for a romantic night with my wife and the fact there was no kids there was a bonus. The Henderson has Jacuzzis in multiple places including the top of the castle. Didn't have a chance to use them because my wife forgot her bathing suite. The dinner at the chop House was a let down unfortunately. Asked for the tasting menu and was told that was at three and it was 4:30 pm. No big deal. Was excited to have dinner though at the chop house. Ordered caviar and oysters Rockefeller for appetizers. That was just the second time ever I've had caviar seemed good but the oyster Rockefeller was cold when we got it which was a common theme for the dinner. The soup and salad was lobster bisque and smoked Caesar salad. The lobster bisque was comparable to a hot deli serving hot soup out of a bag and the smoked Caesar salad was a whole half of romaine head with cooked onions and dressing (really!?!). Then the main course came which was an 45 day aged filet medium with a lobster tail and my 65 day aged ribeye ordered rare. Both with chophouse sauces which were flavorful (beur Blanc sauce). The vegetables in Michigan are not in season in March but still flavored. The problems were the dinner was cold!!!!! And by the time I got my steak it was overcooked to the point you could serve it as medium. I know you have to let the meat rest but it was to the point it was cold and overcooked itself. The menu itself was great and the ingredients were great but the execution was mediocre. When you have prices that are comparable to the Jordan steakhouse in Chicago you expect a step above outback steakhouse. There was three other tables in the restaurant and we sat down at 6:30 and didn't get done til 8:45. I understand though that the current owner is retiring and the castle is up for sale right now March 2024. We skipped breakfast and got back home (Metro Detroit) spent approximately 1100 dollars with you for the wife to say " had a good time but let's not go back there". There is some pros and cons here. The staff is awesome and the bar drinks are outstanding but the rooms are dated and the food is overpriced because of the execution of the menu. It would probably be a whole different story if the food was great. The best part was the bottle of rose for 99 dollars. The only reason for the 4 stars is because of Megan and Matt the bartenders.Nearby activities: Really nothing to do nearby

We went for the murder mystery dinner. The castle is beautiful! Really cool old antiques throughout with neat wood carvings, a knight, fireplaces and many beautiful things. The dinner was delicious. They were able to accommodate our vegan and vegetarian requests easily.Service was good. The game run by Ken Davis was so fun! It was really cool how on our night everyone dressed up and we all had a wonderful time.We walked around the property and it's all well done. The rooms are themed and very antique looking. Our new friends let us take a peek into their "Victorian" room and it was exquisite!Check it out! It's a great way to do something out of the ordinary.

Henderson Castle is an amazing and enchanting place. The atmosphere is wonderful. I loved the very personal and warm reception which made us feel relaxed and comfortable. A+ for personelle. The very styleful historical building and tasteful antique furnishings were amazing. I loved the European flair.

Beautiful building from the outside but inside needs some TLC. Dining room ceilings and cove plaster are in disrepair. About 10' of patch was done but not sanded before painted. The adjacent dining room ceiling has what is probably a 2'x3' board nailed over it, presumably covering a large hole. Ceilings are multiple colors and shades of the same color due to stains and attempted repairs. Went for a Saturday noon tea for $35/person with a group of friends. Waiter boasted that the scones were "made in-house" when he brought the impressive looking tea trays out, which most other items were not house-made, except the salmon and chicken salad sandwiches, both very heavy on the mayo and chicken salad was so heavy on the mustard we initially thought it was egg salad. Generous helping of store bought crackers, salami, mini muffins and chocolates. We didn't touch some of it because it didn't taste very fresh. Surprised there was no fruit. Very underwhelming and I could have done a tea at home with better food and just slightly more effort given all except the scones were store bought. We refilled our own water glasses and teapots a few times because our server was nowhere to be found, I mean nowhere! He made a grand gesture as if we were getting fine service when he did refill out water glasses once after completing our food. And then he was gone again. A friend was going to ask for a mimosa but we never saw him until our way out, just in time to take a picture with my friends. There were no other diners and now I know why. I was surprised to find there were no caffeine free options, except camomille and the tea was good 'ol grocery store teabags. Overall very dissappointing and hope whomever purchases the presently for sale business does a better job. I dined here years ago, same owner, and was very unimpressed. Was excited to try it again for tea thinking it's a different meal type and been years since I'd been. Still a disappointment.
