Several years ago I volunteered at Mackenzie’s with my grandma and sister. It was a great place to be and they were very beginner-friendly. It is evident that Mackenzie’s staff and volunteers truly care about the dogs’ health, happiness and safety. In late 2016 my family finally decided to adopt our dog Brooklyn! She was a very skittish, anxious puppy (due to prior abuse, at no fault of MAS) but she has come such a long way and is living her best life now! She is now almost 8 years old and it has been such a joy living life with her! We have been out of contact with Mackenzie’s ever since simply due to our busy lives, but I highly recommend adopting through them! They provide lots of helpful guidance and have a smooth process of in-shelter visits as well as home visits before the adoption is official. As a bonus, adoption cost is only a couple hundred from what I remember. I can’t say for certain if they’ve changed or not in the last 8 years, but I know they were a huge blessing to our family and of course the countless dogs they rescue!

I'm writing this as a cautionary warning to anybody who may try to apply here, specifically the veterinary portion of the operation. (I don't think the Mackenzie's board is aware of how they do things)
I had interviewed for a vet assistant position and received a job formal written offer from Mackenzie's. I was very excited to start working here because I believe in the mission of most animal rescues (especially no-kill shelters). When you work in the animal industry you expect to get paid a lower rate, it is an unfortunate part of the field. However, the rate I was offered was very low. I started to negotiate rate (which I believe any employee should do) they said they couldn't do the rate I had asked so I came back with a counter rate but mentioned that I would still take the job and look forward to working with them even if the rate can't be accepted. The next day I get a letter rescinding my job offer.
I had put my two weeks notice in at my former job after receiving my formal offer letter from Mackenzie's. I tried to go to the shelter to speak with the Dr. and see if there was a miscommunication or something was taken out of context. She wouldn't even come to the door! I believe in handling things like an adult and in a professional manner so this was very immature and unprofessional behavior. I was trying to go to bat for this job.
I have years of experience with dogs ranging from veterinary general practice to veterinary emergency work, working in local shelters, and daycare/ boarding facilities. The vet told me that I was "inexperienced" and told me to never to return to the facility unless invited. Rude and snarky.
I am a single mom and they put me in a horrible position for no reason. I did nothing wrong and this is an ugly business practice.
The people who work here (aside from the Dr.) are very nice and deserve better.
I think the mission set in place by the non-profit is wonderful, but the management needs to be looked into.
Please be careful applying here or trying to ask for a salary that your experience deserves.

Very abusive towards animals this place, I saw employees smack around animals in front of everyone. Disgusting! Especially they swore at me for pointing it out and said horrible things to me! And assaulted me!

Lovely place for doggos as they wait for their forever home. We adopted our sweet Ellie here back in 2008 and my daughter and I also volunteered here for a few years. Love this place and their care for the dogs is exemplary.

Could not recommend enough. A friend referred me here after I had a horrible experience at a different shelter. It was so refreshing to have a process to follow and transparency about the dog I was interested in adopting. Most shelters give you one picture and let you meet the dog once. At Makenzie's, we met the dog, were given a complete health briefing, got to spend one-on-one time with the dog, then walked him. After the initial visit, we got to come back a second time. The facility is out in the boonies, but it is run very well.

Best animal shelter I've ever been to!! They really care for the animals they take in! Their adoption process might be a bit much in my opinion, but I understand that it's to ensure the dogs are going to a great home.

Over 20 yrs ago we lost our 3 choc labs(mom & 2 sons) the owner of Mackenzie's found them by his work and took them to their rescue. They were just opening and our dogs were the first ones. They were wonderful to Maude, Dakota and Boomer! We were able to get our dogs back because of Mackenzie's and to this day I think about that and how wonderful they were to our dogs! I strongly recommend McKenzie's! They love animals and are so genuine and caring.
