Wurtsmith Air Museum is a non-profit, volunteer-run organization dedicated to preserving the history of Wurtsmith Air Force Base and aviation in northeastern Michigan. Located in three old fighter hangars at the Oscoda Wurtsmith Airport, the museum features numerous displays of military and base memorabilia, as well as nine aircraft on display. The museum is open from mid-May to early October, Friday through Sunday, and offers a variety of exhibits and experiences for visitors. The "Three Hangars of History" showcase the museum's extensive collection, and the knowledgeable and outgoing staff, including former base personnel, are eager to share their knowledge and stories. Visitors can explore the museum's displays, learn about the Tuskegee Airmen's training at the base, and even enjoy a pancake breakfast served by the local Rotary Club during special events. The museum has been featured in Michigan History Magazine and a PBS documentary, and is widely recognized as one of the best small, all-volunteer aviation museums in the country. With a reasonable admission fee and a focus on preserving the rich history of Wurtsmith Air Force Base and aviation in the region, the Wurtsmith Air Museum offers a unique and engaging experience for both aviation enthusiasts and those interested in local history.
