Should have checked reviews before going. My grandmother purchased savings bonds for me when I was a baby and they are now mature. Her name is on them as well as mine. All year I've been going into 5/3 branches to deposit them, varying ones depending on which is closest to where I'm working on a given week. I've never had any problems.Came into this one today and was told they couldn't do it without a death certificate. My grandmother died in 1999, when I was six. I was not the steward of her death certificate as I was in first grade and our family is fractured (an extremely painful thing that was terrible to have to talk about today at the bank) so I don't know who has it. The only physical proof I have of her death is her urn. Every other branch just asked me if she was dead and I told them yes (because she is dead, she would otherwise be well over 100 years old). I found her death record in social security archives, and then was told that starting this year bonds that are payable on death are not able to be redeemed in branch (even though 20 minutes earlier they said if I had her death record they could - once I found proof of death online all of a sudden they couldn't). I left in tears and I am sure that they'll happily charge me an overdraft fee when my account goes into the negative in a few days because I couldn't deposit the bondsAfter I told them all this and showed the proof of death from the archives, they said they can't do it because of "increased fraud."Of course, they did see my bank balances before telling me they couldn't help me, so I also wonder if they were like "oh, she's poor, we don't care about her business anyway." I had a hefty credit card balance with them that I recently paid off so I guess now that they aren't charging me out the butt in interest I'm not worth it to them. Troy is the wealthiest community that I've tried to deposit bonds at and I can't help but wonder if the reason I didn't have issues at the other branches is because smaller or poorer communities know that not every family is blessed with healthy intergenerational relationships where these records are easily accessible to all members. My grandmother is not going to be showing up to claim that money was not for me; she got those bonds to be able to help the grandchild she waited until she was 76 years old for long after she's gone. She'd be devastated to know about this experience I had today and that these bonds feel like more trouble (and humiliation) than they are worth. But end of the day, if I had to choose between having my grandmother's urn or having the piece of paper saying she's dead, I'd take the urn a million times over. And I guess that's worth the $162 of MY money that I wasn't able to deposit into my account today because I don't have a 24 year old piece of paper that I've never even seen (and again, that no other branch has asked for). The reason that this is two stars instead of one is because I've worked in customer service since 2006 and I will never give anywhere a one star review unless everything about it was completely awful and of the three people I talked to, two did seem genuinely sorry that they "couldn't" help me. But I just felt so humiliated with "we can't do it without proof of death, oh now you can show us that, actually we can't do it at all because of fraud." I have had an account with Fifth Third for over a decade, have 100% payment history, and part of why I left the branch in tears is I felt as if they were implying that I was trying to do something illegal as initially I was told they could do it with her death certificate but then once I found proof of death they said no because of fraud. I don't even have any parking or speeding tickets. If their policies didn't apparently change in the 20 minutes I was there, that would be one thing. But I am now in the process of finding a different bank to

Worst customer service. They don't care for opening new account. No clarity or understanding. I have never seen such poor customer support bank ever. Even Manager not interested at all. Everyone just bouncing the question to each other instead of trying to find real solutions to help customer. We went there to open new account, but came back half way after we realized they don't care about anyone. I wish main corporate management take note of this.

We went to the branch on Rochester Rd south of wattles and the hours were incorrect on Google, the branch was not open at all on Saturday. It was inconvenient and annoying to have to find another nearby branch that was able to process the transaction I needed done. Once we went 3 miles out of our way that branch staff did not count our money back to us. We were pulling out a fairly substantial amount, a little over 4k and the teller just put it in the envelope without counting it back.

Far too often, people only leave reviews when they are venting about a poor experience. My experience with this branch, more specifically, the people who work there, has always been delightful. Banking is a commodity, so I choose to bank where the people care about the people they serve. This branch is the reason I keep coming back. Kudos to you!

I seem to always run into problems with this branch. Last week, 5/3 had detected fraud on my account so they sent me a new card; which I never received. I went into this branch to make a deposit and issue a new card, although a few hours later I get a notification telling me the card headquarters "sent" me was activated! My previous visit at this branch was also a nightmare. I was eventually forced to pay ~$300 due to the way the branch manager set up my account. Woodward Ave in Royal Oak is much better.
