On September 1st, 1894 a severe forest fire swept through Hinckley and the surrounding area killing 419 local residents. Following the fire the remains of these victims were buried in four trenches in a mass burial. A state memorial was placed at this location in 1899 to remember and honor the victims. There is a museum in town dedicated to this fire. Unfortunately, another even deadlier wildfire occurred north of here in 1918. That fire killed 453 people and burned down the towns of Moose Lake, Cloquet and other communities.
