Why is the checkout line so slow? And why is there apparently only one employee here?

Went to Dollar General this morning to pick up some coffee and a bag of ice. I was immediately greeted good morning when I came through the door. The staff was nice and the store was clean and organized. I appreciated not having to walk around boxes and ladders to get what I need.
