We went for something unique to do. While this place is unique, it wasn't as much so as it we thought. Honestly, I expected a lot more. It was a bit of a let down.

A wonderful place to go to learn about Victorian hair art. It was fun and informative, our guide knew a lot about the topic. I enjoyed this museum a lot. Definitely worth the price!

We stopped here when we had some time to kill in town for a wedding and I had read about Leila's on Atlas Obscura. As a professional hairstylist and lover of quirky roadside attractions I had to go. It was overall a good experience and the person working there was kind, attentive and knowledgeable, and was able to still continue to tell us new things about the pieces even though a few other folks trickled in. It truly is an impressive collection. Two things, though: Admission was a little steep and cash only and I could not find anywhere stating this on the website. We had to spend an extra 10 mins going to an ATM. Also it appears based on the many, many "Police Lives Matter" type stickers next to the front door that the owner subscribes to this incredibly toxic culture of uncritical police worship that sprung up after BLM started asking the police to stop killing unarmed people (of every race but statistics show they kill unarmed Black people at a higher rate with IMPUNITY). I honestly didn't look closely at them until I left but would have considered turning around and leaving if I had. I know you're in the midwest and all, but that nonsense is again, toxic as heck and super alienating, not to mention gives off some major white supremacist vibes. You should do better, Leila!

Here's the thing: you're not going to find a better Hair Museum, that much I can guarantee. Also, there's a Gates nearby that stays open late, and while Gates is severely not as good as Oklahoma Joe's or Arthur Bryant's (or Woodyard's or Danny Edward's), you could do a lot worse for a post-Hair Museum meal than the 5th best BBQ spot in the country.

Rosie gave a great tour of the “museum”. No politics, no religion (besides descriptions of religious art). The museum is worth seeing because it’ll stick in your mind forever. If you’re like most of us, you had no idea that hair was used as a genealogical database before DNA and detailed family trees. Besides the record-keeping aspect, the detailed tatting-like work that was performed using hair is incredible. The tour is just long enough because at some point you’ve seen it all, but the details are incredible to see. The Smithsonian will have this stuff at some point, but I recommend you see it here first.
