Swordfish Tom's is my favorite cocktail bar in KC. The drinks are insanely good and fairly priced ($9-13). The bartenders and guy who sits you (maybe owner?) are always very nice, in a genuine way. The atmosphere is awesome, an eclectic group of individuals all there to enjoy themselves in an intimate space. 10/10.

It's an excellent place to visit. The drinks averaged $13 which is super reasonable. They can only fit about twenty-six people in there but the wait is typically about 15 minutes.

I really wanted to like this place. Great atmosphere. But my drink tasted like straight fruit juice after the bartender told me “we don’t do excessively sweet here”. I couldn’t even taste or tell there was alcohol in it. Disappointed to have paid so much for something so basic that I couldn’t even finish because it was so sweet. Steer clear of the Viking Juice or whatever. It’s basically just a $14 glass of grapefruit juice.

The vibe here is all the way right as is the funky decor and true speakeasy nature. Great listing of craft cocktails prepared by friendly masters who make 1 of the best old fashioneds in KC. Green means go here. You'll know what I mean when you visit, if you find it. ? Also, go off menu and tell the mixologist your fave flavor profiles, you'll be super happy you did. I had a fabulous smoked vodka and hibiscus drink!

Great drinks and atmosphere. It was full, but still quiet. I loved that I could have a conversation without yelling.

This place is amazing! So genuine, cocktails are fantastic and generous. It's in the alley, if you have trouble finding it. Well worth it!

This place is AMAZING. There aren't too many places I'm not at least somewhat aware of in Kansas City, but this place was a shock to me! Right in the Crossroads (best area in KC) this place sits in a seemingly random alley. All there is on the door is a small placard with the name of the speakeasy. You walk down the steps as with a traditional speakeasy and face a big door. There is a lantern that is either red or green. If it's green, you can knock and be let in. When red, the place is full (pretty common) and you'll have to wait for a group to exit. The drinks are unique and worth the price. I love the KC love in the names of some of the drinks and the selection is vast. I can't remember what I ordered, but I really shouldn't recommend just one because they're all great. The inside is decorated to perfection. Great mood lighting and antique pieces. For some reasons the different chairs stand out! Basically what I'm saying is, go here. You won't regret it!

I'm so glad I finally got to visit Swordfish Tom's after hearing only good things about it. The atmosphere is extremely unique and creates a fun place to visit for a cocktail compared to most places. The cocktails are all really unique and seem to use premium and local ingredients. The staff wants you to have a really enjoyable experience rather than just coming in for a drink. I'll be back to try out more of they unique cocktail menu in an awesome setting.

Came here for the first time yesterday and loved it!! I love, love, love craft cocktails, good vibes, and a nice atmosphere. I received all of that here. I had two drinks from the seasonal menu. Apple pie and I forgot the name of the other but both were so amazing! No pictures are allowed so I can't show you pretty much drinks were so just take my word for it (get it lol). Also, this place is cash only so be prepared for that and there is an atm inside!

This place is amazing. Jill the owner/bartender knows what's up.

I have been to many cocktail bars in Kansas City, and while Manifesto gets all the hype, this is my favorite. Like Manifesto, Swordfish Tom's operates on the speakeasy concept. Unlike Manifesto, where the bartenders tend to be snobbish on what they serve their patrons, the tattooed bartender here custom designed my cocktail to fit my liquors of preference. My drink was called a Sharpie Moustache, which is a rye/gin mixture with two amaros. It was surprisingly tasty. I don't care if the bartender is cis, trans, bi, lesbian, what have you. She makes a damned fine cocktail. The restrooms also reflect this devil may care attitude towards gender and sexuality. Great job!

Kansas City Gem. Not often that you find a very chill place that has amazing cocktails that doesn't cost you an arm and a leg. This is the place! Just in tucked in the alley and down an unassuming staircase you'll find a great cocktail speakeasy. We were between house menus, so they mixed us up some stuff to taste which was great. The vibe was great, and being open late in that neighborhood is lovely. There is waiting space in before entering the main room, but there was plenty of space for us when we arrived fairly late into the evening. Comfy chairs are all around, with dim lighting and cool details spread throughout the space.

Ever since having a proper cocktail experience at Patterson House in Nashville, I've been further seeking to recreate this in Kansas City. I think Swordfish Tom's got close. My GF and I only dropped in for a single drink between dinner and a comedy show, but we were really impressed with everything we experienced. We both had the Jolly Roger and it did not disappoint. In fact I will be working diligently to recreate it at home, as I nearly always have Plantation 5 year Pineapple Rum in my cabinet. We both look forward to an evening where we can spend hours here with friends, enjoying many more of the fine cocktails they have to offer.

Who doesn't love a good Speakeasy? I've tortured speakeasies all over the USA from San Fran to Boston and I was missing just one key aspect at my visit ... the option to connect with the mixologist to discuss what you like, what you're craving so they can mix up the most perfect cocktail JUST for you. The menu was completely overwhelming! But to be honest, I don't really think you can go wrong with any of the selections. Cash only & limited seating but that just adds to the exclusivity of this fun KC Bar!

What a wonderful find! We knocked on the door at 9:30 pm on a Thursday evening and entered a quaint, dark speakeasy with lounge chairs and lanterns glowing all around. It's a very small space. You'll be waiting in line outside the door on a busier weekend evening so I suggest dropping in on a weeknight. They only take cash but there is an ATM in case you've forgotten. The small bar serves an eclectic assortment of seasonal cocktails created by the bartenders and it is fun to watch them mix things up. We ordered a Lochness Tonic (very refreshing cucumber and elderflower), a Main Street Exorcism (tart hibiscus flavors), a Tijuana Ladder (the favorite, with frothy egg whites and fruit flavors), and the No Escape (the most interesting with a smoking cork on top, similar to a Manhattan). Stop in here for something different and you won't be disappointed! Sorry, no pictures allowed!

Wow! Amazing hip, chill space with an upbeat vibe. Less seedy, and less romantic compared to the Manifesto. This place is more well suited for groups as well as couples. It did not disappoint. I loved the well lit stairwell down to the speakeasy. While we waited, we could hear music coming from inside.

This is my to go place when I want to relax with an amazing cocktail. Jill is magically and she creates every drink with the passion to make it the best one she has ever made. Finding it is an adventure. Once you park the car and walk through the alley you are sooooo close to the magic! Once inside, it doesn't matter if the light is red. Have a sit, relax and prepare yourself for an experience once the light turns green!!! Knock on the door, step inside and soak it all in. This is what I imagine a Speakeasy to be. Don't be intimidated by the menu. Just tell the bar keep what you normally drink and they will make you exactly what you never knew you wanted, and some days, needed so badly! Don't miss out on this place. If you're even considering visiting this place ...do yourself a favor ...stop considering and go now!

As good of craft cocktails as you can get in a place with really cool vibes. We really enjoyed our time and drinks here. We'll be back.

I don't need political lessons from my bartender. It's funny to read the card they hand out say "no hate" but then on the same line say "no trump wear". Hypocrisy. I respect people with all different political views, and this is the type divisiveness that we don't need in society. Go to manifesto instead, all the speakeasy charm without the political BS.

I am from out of town and they were so nice to just talk to me. Great people, very laid back and great drinks. Definitely a good place to sit and visit. Would definitely be interested in going again!

I recommend this place to anyone who enjoys a quality drink in a great environment. This is, by far, my favorite place to get drinks. I have been several times and enjoy introducing new people to it. It is an experience unlike any other. The owner is incredibly nice and welcoming. The woman behind the bar is the most talented bartender I've seen. Her ability to keep up with everyone's orders and make them all top notch is amazing. It is hard to find, sometimes requires a wait, but is well worth it.

Swordfish Tom's is one of my Top 10 bars in the Midwest... maybe anywhere ever! The fun begins by entering a random door in a random alley and walking downstairs to another random unmarked door. There will be a sign, and if the lantern is glowing green, then you can knock. I love the feeling of being somewhere you probably shouldn't be! Kiss the usage of your phone goodbye (house rules), gather your cash (cash-only but there's an ATM inside), and head in if/when instructed. Inside feels like a dark, intimate, industrial basement. There's cold elements like raw stone walls and steel machinery, with warm lighting. Love the contrast! We ordered a few drinks at the small bar and loved both of our choices. They offer classic cocktails and intriguing concoctions, even ones that include chocolate + mushrooms. There are T-shirts for sale, poetry books, local art, and other cool things worth exploring in the small space. I truly loved everything and I'm glad we got in and out of there before it got crowded.

Cool speakeasy bar that is definitely worth checking out. Drinks - 5 No food here. Great variety of cocktail drinks. Of 4 drinks we had, 1 was iffy (simply not to our taste), the rest where very good. Bartender/owner was nice to talk to. Service - 5 Not much to it. Drinks were made quickly and well. When you get there and knock on the door, don't expect for it to open right away because the bartender does it and he/she might be occupied at the moment. Atmosphere - 5 Very cool décor. Deep in the basement. One small rooms with 10 or so seats and some standing space. Dark and not too loud. Nice rustic/classic décor. They do have some rules, so follow them if you decide to go. Value - 4 I'm not a fan of paying high prices for drinks, but when the drink and the place is the experience I guess that's okay. Most drinks are $13 with tax included, so actually pretty good deal given the unique experience.
