About Prairie State Park
Prairie State Park is a captivating destination that offers visitors a glimpse into the prairie's rich history. The park boasts beautiful walking trails that transport visitors back in time, allowing them to imagine the journeys of covered wagons and pioneers. Although bison sightings may be elusive, the park is home to a diverse array of prairie wildlife, including buffalo, elk, armadillo, ducks, and rabbits. The land is described as "absolutely amazing," with vast expanses of grass towering above visitors. Trails abound, providing ample opportunities for exploration and relaxation. The park also features the Lester R. Davis Memorial Forest, a remarkable restoration project that has transformed a former strip-mining area into a natural wonder. Visitors can enjoy scenic photo opportunities, participate in informative nature programs, and even camp on-site, making Prairie State Park a truly unique and memorable experience. Despite its hidden gem status, the park is well worth the visit, offering a chance to immerse oneself in the captivating prairie landscape.
Peaceful place to walk and bird. Trails are grass, mowed into the fields. Great diorama at the visitor center, also has an area for kids to touch and learn.
